وقائع العرض المسرحى الأوبامى

أعادت الحالة الاستعراضية المسرحية التي صاحبت أجواء خطبة الخميس لباراك حسين أوباما فن الخطابة إلى الأذهان بعدما كان قد صار جزءاً من التاريخ في وقت أصبح السياسيون يفضلون مخاطبة شعوبهم أو جمهورهم من أمام كاميرات الفضائيات. لم يطرح أوباما فقط رؤيته الجديدة للعلاقات مع العالم الإسلامي بل أيضاً مفهوماً جديداً لتكنيك المسرح والخطابة والتأثير على الجماهير.

حينما اقتربنا من المنطقة المحظورة بجوار جامعة القاهرة صباح يوم الخميس ألتفت لي سائق التاكسي وقال "والنبي يا أستاذ، فيه عندى رجاء صغير" توقعت أن يحملني رسالة ما لأوباما، لكن السائق العجوز الذي قضي فترة من عمره في عراق الثمانيات أوصانى فقط ألا أتهور وأقوم بأى حركة باستخدام الحذاء في إشارة إلى موقعة الزيادى، وذلك على حد قوله لأننا "شبعنا من الفنجرة (الاستعراض) الفارغة". ثم توقف على آخر حدود الدقي أمام أحد الحواجز الأمنية وقال "لغاية هنا يا أستاذ ولا أستطيع معك صبري، إذا تقدمت أنت اخترقت، وإذا تقدمت أنا احترقت"

لم تكن السيارات الملكي أو الأجرة هي فقط غير المسموح له بالمرور بل حتى بعض سيارات الأمن المركزي رفض رجال الأمن تواجدها، واصطف على طول سور الجامعة عشرات الحرس ببذلات فخمة أو ملابس مدنية، أما شارع الجامعة فقد امتلأ بالضيوف الذين ترجلوا من سيارتهم وقطعوا المسافة الباقية نحو قبة جامعة القاهرة مشياً على الأقدام تحت شمس الظهيرة التي كانت في بداية عنفوانها الصباحى.

كان المشهد بمثابة الجزء التحضيري من العرض الذي سيصل ذروته مع خطاب الرئيس الأمريكي الموجه للعالم الإسلامي. وقف الحضور في صف طويل أمام بوابة الجامعة وجميعهم مثلما طلب منهم في الدعوة لا يحمل أي حقائب أو علامات أو لافتات. يمرون من أسفل جهاز كشف المعادن بينما يتحقق رجال الأمن من تطابق الاسم المكتوب على الدعوة مع البطاقة الشخصية للزائر، وأمامى أوقف رجل الأمن أيمن نور ليسأله عن بطاقته الشخصية بينما نور يصارحه أن بطاقته ليست معه. وفي الداخل كانت القاعة ممتلئة بالحضور من الساعة العاشرة والنصف رغم أن أوباما لم يصعد المنصة إلا في الواحدة.

خصصت الصفوف الأولى من القاعة لرجال الدولة السابقين والحاليين وعدد من رجال الأزهر ورموز الكنيسة المصرية بالإضافة إلى "الزعيم" عادل إمام، بينما جلس بقية الفنانين في الصفوف الخلفية إلى جانب مجموعة صغيرة من الكتاب والعاملين في مجال حقوق الإنسان وممثلي الأحزاب السياسية المصرية المختلفة، بالإضافة إلى طلبة الأزهر الأفارقة والآسيويين الذين شكلوا بحيرة من الألوان بملابسهم المزركشة وسط طوفان البذلات الرسمية السوداء، أما مدرج الدور الثاني فقد جلس فيه الصحفيون والمدونون الذين وجهت السفارة الدعوة إلى عدد كبير منهم، إلى جانب عدد من العاملين بهيئات تدريس الجامعات المصرية. واحتل الدور الثالث عدد من طلبة الجامعات المصرية الذين تم اختيارهم بعناية ورغم أنه لم يتم دعوة طلبة من الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، إلا أن طلبة مدرسة "الأمريكان كولدج" الثانوية كانوا الأكثر حضوراً حيث كانوا الأكثر حماساً في التصفيق والصفير أثناء خطاب أوباما.

الساعتين اللتان سبقا ظهور "الأوباما" كانت فرصة لمشاهدة أكبر عدد من الرموز والشخصيات العامة المصرية المتباينة التي لم يكن لأحد القدرة على جمعهم تحت سقف واحد سوى باراك أوباما، بعضهم استغل الوقت في تبادل التحيات والسلام مع أصدقاء قدامى أو تجنب أعداء جدد، وكان أيمن نور أنشط المدعويين يتنقل بين الصفوف ويتبادل الأحضان والتحيات مع كل الحضور بداية من المخرج خالد يوسف وحتى الطلبة الأفارقة الذين أصر كل واحد فيهم على التقاط صورة منفرده له مع نور، بينما سعى الطلبة الأسيوين إلي اختراق الطوق الأمنى حول الصفوف الأولى لمصافحة عادل إمام والتقاط الصور معه، أما في الصفوف الأخيرة فقد جلس الروائي إبراهيم عبد المجيد، بجواره سلوى بكر، فؤاد قنديل، محمد السيد عيد، د.حسن نافعه، ويسري العزب، بينما اعتذر رئيس اتحاد الكتاب العرب محمد سلماوى عن الحضور لأن " الدعوة التى تلقيتها تضمنت حظراً على كل ما كنت أنوى الذهاب إلى الخطاب من أجله، فقد نصت بطاقة الدعوة على أنه غير مسموح بإحضار الحقائب ولا العلامات ولا اللافتات، بينما كنت قد أعددت حقائبى كلها ووضعتها عند باب الشقة، لأخذها معى إلى الخطاب، حتى أكون جاهزاً للقفز فوراً فى الطائرة Air force one المخصصة للرؤساء الأمريكيين قبل أن تتمكن قوات الأمن المصرية من منعى أو مصادرة الحقائب." وذلك طبقاً لما كتبه في مقاله الساخر في جريدة المصري اليوم.

المسرح أصبح مستعداً وبدأت الموسيقي التصويرية مع عمار الشريعى وتترات مسلسل أم كلثوم، ثم تغيير الإيقاع إلى موسيقي عمر خيرت "موسيقار المناسبات الرسمية". أطل زكريا عزمى رئيس ديوان الجمهورية للحظات مع معاونيه تفقد المسرح. ثم فجأة انقطعت تغطية كل شبكات أجهزة المحمول الموجودة في القاعة ليبدأ رجال الدولة في التوافد يتقدمهم الوزير عمرو سليمان رئيس المخابرات يليه جمال مبارك ثم صفوت الشريف يصحبه كمال الشاذلي. وبعد ذلك حضر فضيلة المفتى على جمعة والبابا شنودة والسفيرة الأمريكية بالقاهرة مارجريت سكوبي التى صافحت رجال الدولة في الصف الأول بيدها وحينما اقتربت من فضيلة المفتى أوشك أن يمد يده لكنها وضعت يدها على صدرها واكتفت بالانحناء له من بعيد. ثم دخل القاعة طاقم صحفيي البيت الأبيض الذي يصاحب أوباما طوال الوقت حيث جلسوا أسفل منصة المسرح وقد نصبوا كاميراتهم وفتحوا أجهزة الكمبيوتر، وبينما أخذ الحضور يستعد لظهور نجم الحفل ارتفع الصوت من خلال السماعات "السادة الحضور برجاء ترك سماعات الترجمة مكانها بعد المحاضرة" فانفجرت القاعة بالضحك.

أخر رجال الدولة المصرية حضوراً كان رئيس الوزراء أحمد نظيف الذي جلس بالطبع في الصف الأول، ثم صعد المسرح أحد موظفي البيت الأبيض ومعه حقيبة بلاستيكية دائرية، فتحها وأخرج منها شعار البيت الأبيض الذي يحمل النسر الأمريكي الشهير ولصقها على المنبر الخشبي الذي سيلقي من خلفه أوباما كلمته، كانت تلك هى لمسة الديكور الأخيرة التى ستضاف على المسرح قبل أن تدخل هيلاري كلينتون القاعة من باب جانبي فيرتفع تصفيق الحضور لأول مرة وهو الأمر الذي لم تتوقعه على ما يبدو هيلاري التى ارتسمت ابتسامة واسعة على وجهها وهى تلوح للجمهور، لكن أوباما الذي سبق وانتزع كرسي مرشح الحزب الديمقراطى من هيلاري لم يعطها الفرصة للتمتع بتصفيق الجمهور إذا ارتفع الصوت بالانجليزية منبهاً "أيها السيدات والسادة رئيس الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية" لتنفتح الستارة ويظهر أوباما ملوحاً بيده لتعلو موجة التصفيق يصاحبها حالة من الهتاف والصفير بينما كان الطلبة الأفارقة أكثر الحضور حماسة حيث أخذوا يقفزون على أقدامهم وهم يهتفون باسم أوباما.

استغرق الأمر حوالى 60 ثانية لكى يسيطر أوباما على الحضور ويبدأ كلمته بالانجليزية "شكرا جزيلا، وطاب عصركم. إنه لمن دواعي شرفي أن أزور مدينة القاهرة الأزلية حيث تستضيفني فيها مؤسستان مرموقتان للغاية، إحداهما الأزهر الذي بقي لأكثر من ألف سنة منارة العلوم الإسلامية، بينما كانت جامعة القاهرة على مدى أكثر من قرن بمثابة منهل من مناهل التقدم في مصر. ومعاً تمثلان حسن الاتساق والانسجام ما بين التقاليد والتقدم. وإنني ممتن لكم لحسن ضيافتكم ولحفاوة شعب مصر. كما أنني فخور بنقل أطيب مشاعر الشعب الأمريكي لكم مقرونة بتحية السلام من المجتعات المحلية المسلمة في بلدي" ثم بعربية مكسره حاول نطق حرف العين قائلاً "السلام أليكم" لترتفع موجة التصفيق من جديد.

كانت الفقرة السابقة كافية لترضي غرور الحاضرين الذين ارتسمت ابتسامة واسعة على وجههم، لينتقل أوباما بعد ذلك إلى صلب الموضوع معترفاً بوجود توتر كبير بين الولايات المتحدة والمسلمين حول العالم وهو على حد وصفه "توتر تمتد جذوره إلى قوى تاريخية تتجاوز أي نقاش سياسي راهن" موضحاً أن سبب زيارته هو البحث عن بداية جديدة بين الولايات المتحدة والمسلمين حول العالم، مؤكداً في نفس الوقت أن هذا التغيير ليس من الممكن أن يحدث بين ليلة وضحاها ولا يمكن لخطاب واحد "أن يلغي سنوات من عدم الثقة، كما لا يمكنني في الوقت المتاح لي في عصر هذا اليوم أن أقدم الإجابة الوافية عن كافة المسائل المعقدة التي أدت بنا إلى هذه النقطة."

خطاب أوباما تم إعداده بالطبع قبل الزيارة، ورغم أنه كان يقرأ من شاشتين زجاجتين أمامه لا يمكن لكاميرات التلفزيون أن تلتقطهما، إلا أن بلاغة أوباما وحضوره على المسرح واستخدامه ليديه وتعبيرات وجهه جعلت جميع من في القاعة يندمج مع خطبته التى استغرقت ما يقرب الساعة. كان يدرك أيضاً أين يسرع من نبرة صوته (حينما يتحدث عن حق إسرائيل) وأين يضغط على مخارج الألفاظ ونهاية الكلمات محذراً من خطورة إطلاق سباق للتسلح النووى، ومتى يتوقف بعد كل فقرة يستشهد فيه بالقرآن الكريم أو يشير إلى منجز الحضارة الإسلامية لكى يعطي مساحة لتصفيق الجمهور الذي اندمج مع أوباما في حالة فنية خالصة. بل شاركه بعض الفنانون والممثلون الموجودون في القاعة الأداء حيث وقف الممثل شريف منير في منتصف القاعة هاتفاً بالانجليزيه (رغم أنه كان يستمع إلى الخطاب بالعربية من خلال سماعات الترجمة) "أنا أحبك يا أوباما.. أحبك يا أوباما" ولم يسكت شريف إلا حينما رد عليه أوباما "شكراً"

انتهت الخطبة وبدأ الجمهور في الانصراف حيث تكدسوا لدقائق في حديقة الجامعة حتى يمر الموكب الرسمى أولاً، وتحت النصب التذكاري وقف حوالى 7 أمريكان من حركة Code Pink الداعية للسلام ممسكين بلوحات وردية اللون – اللون المميز للحركة- ويهتفون بالانجلزية مطالبين أوباما بالتوقف عن دعم إسرائيل ومحاكمة القادة الإسرائيليين المتورطين في جرائم حرب في غزة، ورغم الأمن المكثف والحراسة المشددة إلا أن رجال الأمن كان يكتفون بالابتسام للمتظاهرين السبعة الذبن بدو كممثلين ثانويين جاءوا مع أوباما لإكمال العرض.

Its funny how things play out. sometimes, most times, its quite tragically- but as consistently it is with deep, almost comic irony.

Yes, this is sort-of about the Obama speech in a convulted sort-of logic. Let me delay my conceptual qualms with dichotomies such as "america can co-exist with islam" (where can i get islamic citizenship by the way?) and let me overlook my dismay with his complicity with the Mubarak regime. For philosophical concerns, i'd rather refer you to this very insightful article. But about Palestine, I was still thinking you know, its a good thing what Obama said, about Israel being an occupying power, and about Palestinians suffering untolerable daily humilation. But with equal scrutiny I wondered about why he asks Muslims to not get trapped in the history of colonialism, but lists the atrocities of the holocaust. why he tells Palestinians to abandon violence but doesnt mention the devestating cast lead operation. Then i tell myself, well, he's a politician, and he's getting enough of an ass kicking in America for even just being here, from all sorts of paranoics and crackpots. But I wasnt too forgiving on that point. But as i followed the hype of the Abdulhakim Muhammad incident i realied: America is chucked full of lunatics with no degree of sense or reason. Please see here.And unlike the crazy crackpots in Egypt, these ones have voting power.gak! I had just written my response, here to this guy, and had just managed to retrieve my eyeballs from how far back they had rolled to the back of my head after reading the rants of this loser here. Although I'd always thought Obama was an adventurous and brave man, sometimes I forget what he's up against. But then, things never stay in one way. Against this intense rhetorical whopping that Obama was getting, being questioned as to how he would "justify this one", came the most startling statement, that could outshine any retort I could have tried to tell some of these bloggers. A crazy supremacist senile white man, shoots a black security guard at the national holocaust museum. Obama was lecturing us about the wrongs of denying the holocaust, but few are bigger critics than whats his face,James W. von Brunn. Id like to see the haters try to pin that one on the Muslim world. Or scarily run away from the whole thing. I feel really sorry for the family of the deceased guard but I absoultely have to admit that I chirped and clapped my hands when I clicked on the story and realised it was a white american who dun it.

قال أوباما قبل عام في واحدة من خطبه الانشائية البديعة_وكل خطبه انشائية بديعة_أنه يتفهم غضب عدد من الدول وقطاعات كبيرة من العالم تجاه الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية،مشيرا بوضوح إلي موقف العالم الإسلامي من بلاده،وقال قولته التي أثارت جدلا في ذلك الحين.. "إن الغضب مفهوم"

يمكن اليوم بوضوح الرجوع إلي هذه الجملة المفتاحية لقراءة خطابه _الانشائيالبديع_الذي ألقاه في جامعة القاهرة،والذي بدا من ثناياه أن أوباما يعتقد فعلا بأن الغضبمفهوم لكنه ليس بالضرورة "مبرر"!

من مقعدي في الطابق الثاني تحت قبة جامعة القاهرة،استمتعت كغيري بالخطاب الجريء الذي ألقاه الشاب الأسمر،وأمسكت نفسي أكثر من مرة متورطا في تصفيق حاد ،ملبيا نداء مشاعري التي داعبها الرجل بمهارة (آيات قرآنية_اسم ذكر النبي محمد مشفوعا بالصلاة عليه_امتداح الحضارة الاسلامية والاقرار بفضلها) لكن في النهاية الأمر لم أر جديدا،فها هو يعيد طرح حل الدولتين،لكن بصيغة أكثر لطافة وتهذيبا من لغة سلفه الغبي جورج بوش،وها هو يعيد لف البضاعة القديمة في صندوق أكثر أناقة.

لكن ينبغي ذكر عدد من الملاحظات:

1-بهذا الخطاب رفع أوباما سقف الحديث مع العالم الاسلامي إلي حد معقول ،فقد أبدي تفهما عميقا لمشاعر المسلمين ولطبيعة الزاوية التي ينظرون من خلالها إلي إلي سياسات الولايات المتحدة تجاههم،وهو ما يعد تطورا كبيرا في تاريخ الحديث بين الطرفين، مقارنة بانحياز رؤساء أمريكيين سابقين بصورة مطلقة لاسرائيل،دون محاولة تفهم كيف ينظر القلب والعقل العربي والمسلم إلي "القضية" وهو ما يؤسس_في ظني_لمرحلة جديدة من الوعي في الذهن الأمريكي،ولسقف أعلي،لاشك سيضيف_ولو بصورة تراكمية_ لصالح مستقبل "القضية".

2-الإحالات الضمنية التي شبه بها أوباما وضع النضال الفلسطيني ضد الكيان الصهيوني بوضع السود تحت نير العبودية والتفرقة العنصرية لعشرات السنين في الولايات المتحدة أصابت من المتابع الصهيوني مقتلا،فقد أضفت علي القضية بعدا أخلاقيا_في نفس المواطن الأمريكي_وحملت الكفاح الفلسطيني بتراث مشرف لتجربة مثيرة،كما أنها تعيد صياغة طبيعة الصراع في الشرق الاوسط في اذهان الامريكيين الذي يتعاطفون من المغتصب الاسرائيلي.

لكنه من ناحية أخري انحاز لنموذج المقاومة الهاديء وألمح إلي أنه علي الفلسطينيين أن يسلكوا ذات الطريق الذي سلكه السود من أجل نيل حقوقهم(مارتن لوثر كينج ومالكوم إكس مثلا).وهي قراءة مثالية لطبيعة الصراع في الشرق الأوسط،لا تقترب من الواقع بحال من الأحوال وتصب في صالح اسرائيل أكثر مما تصب في صالح الحق العربي والمسلم.

3-اعتبار المسلمين_كأفراد_ جزء من الحضارة الأمريكية ،فقد ساهم أفراد عديدون منهم علي مدار تاريخ أمريكا في صنع قراراتها وبناء أعلي بناياتها بل و خوص حروبها!وهي مقاربة تذهب إلي قراءة الوضع بصورة عكسية،فالمسلمون مساهمون،ولو بحصص صغيرة في رأس المال،ومن ثم فقد آن الأوان لتوزيع الأرباح بصورة عادلة وفقا للقواعد الرأسمالية الرشيدة،ولابد أن ينوب المسلمين من الحب جانبا.وأعتقد أن الإسلام_بصورة تاريخية مجردة_أسبق في وجوده من الولايات المتحدة وأكبر من حيث التاريخ والتجربة وعدد المعتنقين والقوة الاقتصادية من الولايات المتحدة نفسها،ومن ثم فالمقاربة متعجرفة بعض الشيء.

4-الاستشهادات القرآنية التي ساقها وألهبت مشاعر الحاضرين والسامعين،كانت متبوعة باستشهادت من الكتاب المقدس_ولا مشكل بالطبع في ذلك_ وكانت أيضا مشفوعة في ذات الوقت باستشهاد من التلمود! ومن ثم فإن الرجل يرضي جميع الأطراف _بصورة بهلوانية رشيقة_مع مراعاة الوزن النسبي الذي يقتضي استرضاء العالم المسلم.

5-في النهاية أنا متفاءل فلم تكن أروع طموحاتي تذهب إلي أن يتكلم رئيس أمريكي بهذه اللهجة الأقرب إلي الحياد ولا بهذه المفاتحة الأدني إلي الاعتذار.وحتي لو أكد الرجل في خطابه علي عداء بلاده للقاعدة فهو فصل_تلفيقي_برأيي لتجنيب العالم الاسلامي حمل "وزر" مغامرات تنظيم القاعدة.وهي مقاربة تصب في النهاية إلي دول ومحور اعتدال،و"عصابات" إرهاب!

قبل معاد الكلمة بيومين كنت سامع ان اوباما هيقابل سبع مصريين لمدة عشر دقايق بعد الكلمة .. والسبعه كانوا جايين علي هذا الاساس .. لكن في اتلغت في اخر لحظه المقابله اتلغت !
كلام اوباما مشوفتش ان عليه غبار .. وقارنت بينه وبين كلام السادات في الكنيسيت .. بس اتمني ان المقارنه دي متوصلش للتطابق في التنفيذ كمان !
تصريحات اوباما بخصوص عدم وجود حرب بين بلده وبين الإسلام .. تصريحات مش جديده علي الإدارات الامريكية سواء كانت جمهورية او ديمقراطية .. فسمعنا بوش وهو بيردد نفس التصريحات تقريبا في وسط حروب افغانستان والعراق .. لكن فيه فرق كبير ؟

THE VISIT

When we used to tell people that we're 8 Egyptian bloggers in the United States blogging the campaigns and the elections they all found it really awesome. And Most people asked us the most asked question an American would ask an Egyptian coming to blog the elections:

"Do people in the Middle East/Islamic/Arab World hate us?"

And 'NO' I answered every time.

We don't hate you. Peoples of the third world have been colonized, invaded, and exploited enough times to know how it feels like not to be represented by their government. And most people trust that Bush did not represent the American people. However, we put the responsibility, not the blame, on the American people to use the power that they have to make changes that would help bring peace and prosperity to the region...

And thus Obama won,

Will the man of hope people voted for bring truth to his prophecy?

Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Darfur, are all proximal hot spots in need of cooling. And thus Egypt's role comes as very momentous as this coincides with the first time Mubarak visits the US since 2004 and the issues Egypt's role is currently facing regionally. It will all roll out in the coming days.

To choose Cairo as a podium to address the Muslim World sheds light on the status of Egypt's influence and strategic importance. (I would just like to take this chance and point out that Egypt existed before there was even religion) Plus it puts a lot of weight on the anticipated hearty speech.

Is this the beginning of a dodge in US foreign policy?

In January 2009, eight of our Egyptian bloggers met with then the US Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, James K. Glassman, in the virtual newsroom of the American University in Cairo in Second Life. This is part of it.

The meeting in Second Life is part of a broader collaborative project between Dancing Ink Productions and the American University in Cairo exploring how virtual worlds can be used to augment journalistic goals globally, cut costs and enhance and deepen the interview process by providing access to often hard-to-reach subjects.

The project is directed by Lawrence Pintak, head of the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Research and Training at the American University in Cairo, and produced in collaboration with Dancing Ink Productions and Ill Clan Animation Studios.

The real significance of the Obama Presidency

actually start to think about what Obama's presidency REALLY means. His office
and his job have NOTHING to do with race. His being elected DOES NOT improve
race relations in this country or abroad.

In fact, his presidency has
already proven that Americans are still STUCK ON STUPID when it comes to
cultural and racial sensitivity and tolerance, whether they be Black, White,
Brown, or otherwise.

Case in point:

As the inauguration
approached, more White and Latino Americans began asking my husband and I if we
were excited, if we were "going to party" with "our president", and other
paternalistic, foot-in-mouth questions. Am I planning to 'party' with 'my
president' on Tuesday? I'm supposed to be excited about this just because I'm
Black, with no regard to my values or even my political affiliation? No matter
what I stand for, Obama's being Black is supposed to be enough to make me want
to party? That's how you see it? Of COURSE that's how they see it, because
that's all we project! Then we allow the drive-by media to make it all about
race while pretending it's not all about race! Aaaaagh

Since Black Americans made this election all about having our first
African-American president, please believe that's what his tenure is going to be
about. The media played on White guilt while Obama campaigned, being sure to put
every proud Black face and African relative the man had on national television.
We showed our preoccupation with race, and they showed it to the world (If you
don't think this was intentionally done and that it didn't affect any White
voters, you are fooling yourself). So, understand that Obama's skin is always
going to be in the forefront during his tenure as president, whether you like it
or not, and whether people are willing to admit it or not.

So, what does
that mean?

* If he makes any huge mistakes (and he will), non-Black
Americans will deflect those failures upon Black leadership in general.

* If Black Americans as a whole do not improve their condition during
his tenure, Obama will appear to be an exceptional African-American compared to
the rest of us ignorant thugs.

* If Hollywood gets too progress-happy,
we may see a huge increase in Black characters who are professionals and
government officials in television and movies - that's just superficial and
annoying to ANYONE who watches it long enough.

* All of the cries of
disenfranchisement will be thwarted and considered baseless because if America
can elect an African-American president, the playing field must be leveled,
right? This isn't good if you are a proponent for Affirmative Action or other
special rights for minorities.

* Black History Month will probably bring
out the nationalistic tendencies in most of us, causing us to overdo it and put
our Blackness in everyone else's face, turning off White Americans who thought
that electing an African-American president was about togetherness and the
progress of the country as a whole when it was really about us 'having our day
in the sun'. This will serve to separate us even more.

* If Obama screws
up royally, White Americans won't be voting for another African-American
president for a long time, considering that so much emphasis was placed on his
being African-American.

Don't get me wrong, people; I understand the
historical significance of an African-American president, and it is something
that should be celebrated. However, I believe that we were exploited by the
Democratic Party and the left-wing media in order to further their own causes,
NOT ours! At the end of the day, we play the race card and we make race an issue
WAY TOO MUCH, even when we have the right to do so. It's like the football team
who discourages end zone dancing - when you have a victory, act like you
expected to. When you make your way to success, have some class; act like you've
been there before. We can still celebrate progress while having a certain amount
of necessary reservation. We want people to treat us as if they are colorblind
when we're not. So, when it works in our favor, we're happy. However, when the
racially charged beast we helped create comes back to bite us in the butt, who
will we blame then>

It's kinda already happening!

Man, say what you say about him, but he made the last 8 years filled with fun Unpredictability. You just never knew what he was going to do next. If Global consensus was on something, he would be like "Yeah, ok, that's nice." and then does something else entirely. And he gave all my democrat friends ulcers from worry about what he was going to do all the time, and what "democracy-destorying-fanatsy" they could come up with next. I mean, they almost had me convinced that any day now, he and the jews were going to start another 9/11 and pass a law that would make him a President for life, like their Hero Fidel Castro and his fanboy wannabe Hugo Chavez. Even after Obama was voted in, many really thought that Bush was going to start a War against Iran any second now, just to screw over Obama. None of those things happened of course, but damn, he made them really think of new ways he- despite being the idiotic chimp man they knew he was- would geniusly take over the country and maniplate the public. And his people. I miss his People. The fact that Rumsfeld is no longer allowed to do press conferences where he gets to be his asshole self and torture the reporters makes baby jesus weep a little. And Cheney, who actually shot someone and got away with it, nevermind that that someone was his friend. And who can forget Condi and her legs? Or Wolfie and his haircomb or his tunisian girlfriend? Or John "The Moustache" Bolton, who treated the other UN ambassador's like his Prison Bitches?

I am a fan of Chaos, and he gave us that aplenty, which is why I will always love him. For a good couple of years he scared the shit out of every arab leader in the region, and forced some of them, including our own, to enact some democratic reforms. Not bad for a dumb cowboy, no? Plus, look at Iraq today. (Remember Iraq? Whatever happened to those "No blood for Oil" demonstrations anyway? And how did Obama get the anti-war people to support a war in Afghanistan?) Bombings are down, US soldier casualties are almost nonexistant, they are having a new election where the secularists are favored to win over the islamists, and the country has billions of dollars in reserves (74 billion to be exact), not to mention all the Oil that Bush was supposed to steal and never did. Who would've thought?

Yeah, I am going to miss W. , at least for a while, for all those reasons, and because it feels like he was always there as President anyway. Those 8 years did not pass quickly at all, and they were so tumolteous and filled with Drama, that I doubt anything Obama can conjure up (with the possible exception of him getting a white mistress, which would be AWESOME. Double Awesome points if its Ann Coulter) can equal or parallel. Just the slow and expected fall from grace that will take place over the next 4 years, when they discover that the man is not a miracle worker. Let's hope he really does invade Pakistan. Now that will make things fun again.

كانت ثلاث خطوات فقط تفصل بين السيدة كارول صاحبة هذا المنزل وبين راشيل الفتاة ذات ال14 ربيعا التي أمسكة لوحة مرسومة لباراك أوباما ووضعتها بجوار وجهها وهي تتابع أخبار الانتخابات علي شاشة سي إن إن.عندها صرخت راشيل : "اووووووه لقد حصلنا علي نيوهامبشير"..عندها قفز الجميع فرحا،فقدت حسمت نيوهامبشير امرها لصالح باراك اوباما. وعندما قطعت راشيل هذه الخطوات الثلاث وضعت علي الطاولة التي تتوسط الصالة طبقا من البطاطس الشيبسي امام ما يقرب من عشرة مراهقين سود يتابعون ما يجري في كل ولاية،عن طريق الانترنت وشبكات التلفزيون الامريكي.

وحينها قالت لها إحدي الصديقات اللوائي يملأن المنزل:لي صديق يتصل من ولاية أخري يقول لي نحن نسير بصورة جيدة..أوباما يحصد الاصوات ياكارول..إنه يفعلها..عندها مالت كارول علي الارضية الخشبية لصالة منزلها ثم لمستها طويلا بينما تضغط علي اسنانها فرحا "تاتش وود".

كارول سيدة سوداء في نهاية الثلاينات،لديها ثلاثة اطفال،وتحظي بمكانة عالية بين مجتمع الافروامريكيين في مدينة سيراكيوز بنيويورك،لذا فقد كان طبيعيا ان تختار ثماني عائلات من اصول زنجية بيتها لتترقب فيه نتيجة الانتخابات.

الدخول الي بيت كارول لايستدعي الكثير من التدقيق كي تدرك انك في عالم متكامل خاص بالسود.فبين حوالي 22 شخصا في هذا المنزل ،قبيل اعلان النتيجة، كان الجميع يرتدي تي شيرتات تحمل صورة اوباما او ملصقات تشير الي تأييده،بينما اختار تشارلز(15 سنة) ارتداء تي شيرت يحمل صورة القس البروتستانتني مارتن لوثر كينج،بينما موسيقي الراب تصدع من مكان ما،ويقوم كل ثلاث دقائق تقريبا احد المراهقين ليرقص علي ايقاعها.

تنحيت عن طريق السيدة كارول وهي توزع المزيد من بوسترات التأييد علي الطاولة لأجدها تضع علي احدي الرفوف عددين من إحدي المجلات المختصة بعالم السود،كان غلاف العدد الأول يحمل صورة اوباما،بينما الثاني يحمل صورة ميشيل زوجته،وبعدهما بعدة سنتيمترات كتاب اوباما الاشهر "من أحلام والدي".

وعندما دخلت السيدة ميشيل التي تبدو في أواخر الخمسينات ،هلل المراهقون احتفاءا بها وهللت السيدات اللوائي برفقة كارول،فقد كن مشغولات حينها باعداد اكواب البيبسي وأطباق الفراخ المحمرة والمكرونة والحلوي.

قالت لي ميشيل :"أوباما هو الشخص الصح في المكان الصح،انه الرجل الذي سيضع الامور في نصابها". قلت لميشيل هل لي أن أسألك لماذا اشعر ان تأييد هذا المنزل لاوباما راجع بالمقام الاول لانه اسود؟ فردت :"انه يعكس عالما يفيض بالانسانية،انه يمثل خلفية ما تدعو للتفاؤل،الامر ليس لانه اسود فقط..انظر الي ما يمثله باراك اوباما".

ولم تكد تكمل جملتها التالية حتي صرخت راشيل :" ياهوووووووووو لقد حصلنا علي بنسلفانيا" فهلل الجميع وتركتني راشيل وراحت ترقص مع الصبية المراهقين فرحا بفوز السيد اوباما بولاية أخري...وصاحت كارول :"أوباما يفعلها..انه يفعلها يا ميشيل!".

ساعتها

أخذت فيفان ذات الستة عشر عاما زمام المبادرة وقالت لي :"انا أنتمي لعائلة من الطبقة المتوسطة..ببساطة شديد سيهتم بي اوباما ولن يفعلها ماكين"

أخرجت السيدة كارول من الثلاجة تورتة (يصل مقاسها تقريبا الي 40 سم في 20 سم) يحمل نصفها صورة مرسومة لباراك أوباما، ولدي رؤيتها هللت النساء وأطلقن صيحات الفرحة.لكن شيئا ما حدث جعل كارول تحبس أنفاسها .."لقد ضاعت نورث كارولينا" هكذا همست راشيل!

لم يبدد صمت ضياع نورث كارولينا وانحيازها لصالح جون ماكين سوي المزحة التي أطلقتها بيري ذات الخمسة عشر ربيعا وهي تخاطبني :"أتود أن تعرف لماذا أشجع باراك اوباما؟" أومأت لها أن نعم،فأمسكت صورة زيتية له ووضعتها بجوار وجهها وقالت :"لانه يشبهني..ألست تري؟ إنها ذات الملامح". هنا تقول "جاكي" ذات السبعة عشر عاما: لا نعتبر ان اول رئيس اسود هو باراك اوباما..فلدينا جون إف كيندي وبيل كلينتون!

ضحك الجميع،من المزحة التي ترمي الي انهم سود يؤيدون مرشحا اسودا..هكذا هي الحقيقة أو جزء منها!

عندها سألت تشارلز ذي السبعة عشر عاما :"لماذا ترتدي تي شيرت يحمل صورة مارتن لوثر كينج الليلة؟"..فرد تشارلز :"أنا أشجع باراك اوباما..وقد كان لكينج حلم..ولاوباما حلم ايضا..انه نفس الحلم..أنا اشجع الحلم".

ثم أردف تشارلز :"انا اتفق معه في سياساته سيما فيما يخص الخارج والقضايا الاقتصادية وموضوع الطاقة" ثم يستدرك :" ماكين رجل جيد ايضا..لكني أميل لاوباما".

تعبت من طول الوقفة التي امتدت لثلاث ساعات تقريبا،وحينها جلست بجوارهم علي الكنبة،وتناولت الصورة الزيتية لاوباما التي تناولتها بيري منذ قليل،فإذا في الصورة تغييرات في الملامح عن الشكل الاصلي..هذه الصورة جعلت اوباما زنجيا اكثير من اللازم!..لقد وسعوا فتحتي انفه وغيروا شيئا ما في ملامحه..عندها لاح تي شيرت تشارلز الذي يحمل صورة مارتن لوثر امام وجهي،فإذا بشبه كبير بين الرجلين بعد التعديل!

هنا يقول جورج الذي يرتدي تي شيرت كبير يحمل صورة اوباما :"سياسة اوباما الخارجية ومقاربته الاقتصادية تروقاني جدا..بينما ماكين ليس كذلك يا تشارلز".

جاءتني السيدة كارول وقالت لي برقة بالغة :ألا تريد أن تتناول أي شيء؟ فشكرتها بشدة،فكررت:من فضلك ان احتجت شيئا ما قل لي،وبينما نتبادل الابتسامات الرقيقة صاحت بييري :"أوووووووووه بنسلفانيا معنا..بنسلفانيا لنا!".

حينها هلل الجميع وصرخوا وراح الاطفال يمرحون هنا وهناك بينما البالونات الحمراء لا تفارق ايديهم،ومن وقت لاخر يوقعون شيئا من مكانه هنا او هناك،الي ان اصطدم بي احدهم،ذو اربعة سنوات فقط،سألته عن اسمه فقاله لي..لم اسمعه جيدا فتهجاه بعنف ! لم استوضحه فسألته لماذا تشجع باراك اوباما،فوضع اصبعه في فمه وقال :"لانه لطيف!".

هنا التقطني فرانك ذو الاحد عشر عاما بعدما انهي مكالمة هاتفية مع احد الاصدقاء وقال لي :"يقولون ان اوباما اشتراكي..انا أؤيده، واعتقد ان شيئا من الاشتراكية مطروح فعلا في سياسته،لكنه شيء سيقودنا للامام وسيحسن اوضاعنا".

وصل المنزل في هذه اللحظة الي درجة من الزحام لايمكن وصفها،الضجيج من كل مكان،راشيل ترقص علي اغنية راب،جورج يتناول طبقا من الحلوي ويقطع الطريق من وقت لاخر،كارول تتمم علي ضيوفها،ميشل تلتقط صورا فوتغرافية من وقت لاخر وتهلل وتصيح "أوباما ياهووووووووووووو".

إلي أن بث التلفزيون تقريرا تفصيليا عن الوضع أشار الي تقارب نسبة الرجلين،عندها وجم الجميع وشهقت كارول،وصمت الاطفال وخيم صمت ما علي المكان لمدة دقيقة تقريبا،بدت خلاله اطباق الحلوي كما لو كانت تشاركهم الصمت هي الاخري وبدا كل شيء في المنزل محبطا،حتي الاثاث نفسه.

راح الحاضرون يستأذنون رويدا رويدا،واضطررت لترك منزل السيدة كارول فقد وصلت الساعة الثانية عشر الا عشر دقائق تقريبا،وحين قطعت المسافة عائدا نحو الفندق،بينما الطرقات هادئة جدا،سمعت صيحات النصر :"أووووووووووووووووووووووووووووووه..فعلها أوباما..فعلها"

Of all the unexpected occurences that fill my life as I tread on the path that I forge myself as I go along- I never would have expected to one day be able to say I had seen the president of the United States in person. Not only because it is so far fetched but because its not particularly a life goal I aspire to, and seeing the American president sounds like its something that would only happen if you really, really want it to.

Before someone calls me out on a technicality- yes, I do count seeing Obama the day before the elections, November 3rd, to count as seeing the U.S president.

Zeinab and I ended up at the last Obama rally of the presidential campaigns in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the span of a few hours we had met a group of Canadians in the lobby of our hotel in Chapel Hill, NC, who had actually driven down from Ottawa to help campaign for Obama and were about to take the 2 hour drive from Chapel Hill to Charlotte in order to see the rally, and do some volunteer campaigning in the last hours where their efforts could still make a difference on what they called "the road to change". Zeinab and I were welcomed by Mitch, Bart, Tyler, Michael and Adam to join in. We went to Charlotte, we canvased, we door-to-doored, we got volunteer tickets, we went to UNC Charlotte, we shuttled, we queued, we stood in the rain, and in the end, we were only 10 feet away from the man who would be the president 24 hours later.

Because we had canvased for the campaign, we were given priority tickets and ended up so close to the podium I could see Barak Obama's facial expressions, I could see his pupils darting from side to side, and slow down as he spoke of the passing of his grandmother. I could see his hand gestures as he articulated the promises we will inevitably discover if he will keep. And I stood in the midst of the ritual chanting his supporters boomed, in unison, totally engulfed, although I was not one of them. So this is what its like to have a leader, I thought, to want one, or respect one, or find one. Interesting. Everything in America is fun though, what would elsewhere be an intensely policed and secured gathering, burdened by the idolization of national emblems, in America, is a toe-tapping Country music, and people throwing back small American flags back into the crowd to fight over, while the rain hits down on cotton caps with Obama's smiling face printed on the front in a combination of bright green and red, and puns like "Barack to the Future." Someone passed me a flag to, because my hands were busy holding the camera, it was thoughtful of that stranger I suppose. I took it from them kindly, but I didnt know what to do with it. I stood there filming and tapping my toes and rocking in the rain, totally engulfed, but not one of them.

Where do we go from here?

Watching the news channels in the US this morning, I am both amazed and amused by their inability to deal with the Obama win. It's like the old song lyrics go: "The Battle is done, and we kinda won, so we sound our victory cheer. Now tell me, where do we go from here?"

CNN is still a cornucopias of holograms and colors, with them still stressing over the number of senate and house seats whose ballots haven't been counted yet, and getting the right amount of popular votes for each candidate, because while it was important to let McCain know that he lost, it's even more important to twist the knife, because, otherwise, where is the fun in that?

MSNBC , on the other hand, has calmed down a little bit since yesterday cry-a-thon (seriously, news anchors were crying from Joy. So much for media unbiasedness), and are now getting down to the business of "Who will be in an Obama government", and arguing over every hypothetical appointee- even though Obama didn't choose anybody yet. Bush is so not mentioned anymore I think he should like bomb somebody, as if to remind the people that he is still around, and has 2 more month in office, during which he can still kind of do damage. Come on Bush, be a maverick: Bomb Vietnam or something. They will never see it coming!

A brief switch to the land of BET (that's Black Entertainment Television for you, whitey) has shown a a talk show where the host was asking a number of very well dressed Black folks what they should do to help the first black President, and one of them said that they now have to become more responsible, better husbands and wives, make sure that their kids stay in school and get an education,so that Obama can have- and I am not even kidding here- a "grassroots army of supporters" ready to come to his aid when he needs it. And that's when I switched the channel, because if you were waiting on a President from your same ethnicity to make sure your kids get an education, for no other reason than have them become soldiers for his cause, then, ehh, I don't even want you to vote. Nothing personal, You just don't sound all that well in the head to me.

And finally- and I have kept the best for last- Fox news. Oh Fox news. Watching Brit Hume yesterday referring to himself as a "Child of the civil rights movement" just made me fall off my bed and into the floor laughing my ass off. Way to Go Brother Brit. And then this morning they had Karl Rover Over to explain to them what happened: The news anchor asked bewilderingly "we always thought the country was center right, is this no longer the case?", to which Karl assured him that it is the case, by stating that Obama's policies of "cutting taxes for 95% of the american population" and "not having the government in complete control of health care" are both right-wing positions, and that's what won him the election. So Obama is a right-winger now? And here I thought he was a socialist communist godless muslim. My bad. So, I guess, for all you right wing people out there, Hurray for us. One of us just became President. Let's break out the champagne.

As for Palin, my dear lovely Palin who I will miss so much (and yes, I still have a crush on her: A beauty queen who runs shit in her own state, likes having kids -i.e. screwing- and her hobbies include shooting wolves from Helicopters? I WANT THAT!! Any Junior Palin's out there? I am single, baby. Hit me up), there is nothing on her since she last appeared crying yesterday. Whether she is the future of the republican party, or the next White Oprah, we don't know, but I know that she shouldn't run in a national election again. As this father of a friend of mine said to me yesterday "Palin..good for erections..bad for elections". Wise words from a wise man, one that we all could learn from.

And last, I leave you with this average Obama Voter, who will most likely hate him once he actually has to govern the mess that is the USA today.

And if you are curious why she will hate him, just watch this video, and just wait for the day when Black voters will turn on Obama and say things like "well, you know, he is half-white!"

لا شك أن ساكني سيراكيوز قد قطنوها منذ زمن قريب لايتعدي العشر سنوات،فهدوء هذه المدينة ينتمي إلي اليوم الذي فرغ فيه الله من صنع الأرض،ومنذ تلك اللحظة لم يسكنها_أي سيراكيوز_ أحد،وهو ما يفسر أن تراكمية السكني علي مدار عشر سنوات_ان اتفقت معي في التقدير_ لم تبدد هدوء وسكون ملايين السنين من عمر الكوكب الأرضي الأنيق.

ومن ثم أقول لك_ بقلب جسور_ أن هناك عيبان أساسيان لمن تلقي به الأقدر لتغطية أحداث الانتخابات الأمريكية في سيراكيوز..

الأول أن هدوئها يغلف كل شيء،حتي أخلاق ساكنيها،وهو ما يعني أنك بالتبيعة لن تشعر أن هناك انتخابات ولايحزنون،إلا من جملة عابرة هنا أو هناك.

الثاني أنك في أي لحظة قد تجد نفسك الشخص الوحيد الذي يهيم علي وجهه في طرقاتها،وهو ما يعني أن إمكانية انجاز اي قدر من العمل شيء شبه مستحيل..إلا إذا كانت مهمتي متابعة شؤون الفراغ،وهي _لعمري_مهمة جليلة لا يتأتي لمثلي أن يقوم بها بمفرده.

وبناءا علي ما سبق يمكن القول أن التقاط مشاهد مصورة ليوم الانتخابات يكاد يكون شيئا عسيرا..لكن الذي أعدكم به علي نحو يقيني ..أن بحوزتي الكثير والكثير من اللقطات نصف النادرة للسناجب وهي تمرح هنا وهناك.

They said he moved crowds, stirred up the passions of millions and brought the masses together in rapturous dancing and weeping all at once.

They said he offered hope to the desperate and amelioration to the devastated; he championed the underdog and spoke truth to power.

More importantly, they said, he could unite us. He would bring together the rich and the poor, the educated and the illiterate, black and white, Arab and Jew, conservative and liberal, gay, straight and all the shades in between.

They said he was the man for this century, and no one else could do it. The true cosmopolitan who would usher in a new humanitarian age of pax americana. Crowds would flock and swarm to see him, to be in his invigorating presence and hear his scintillating speeches everywhere from North Carolina to California, from Berlin to Jakarta and from Nairobi back to Chicago.

They said all of this, so we made the pilgrimage, threw caution to the wind and set out to see the man who would usher in a new age. Word of mouth had it that he would be 130 miles away to give his last speech before the Fateful Day. Through previous and very kind acquaintances we were put in contact with a group of strangers-to us and to the land- who were on a journey inspired by Him. It would cost all the riches and sustenance we had to get there and back, we could end up stranded in a strange land with no roof over our heads and no method of transport, but something urged us to go on.

We entered their vehicle not knowing their names, but soon found out that we were among kindred spirits. The vehicle-named the Road to Change- was bursting with energy. In the true spirit of the diversity he claimed to represent and encourage we journeyed together, children and adults, men and women, gay and straight, white, black, latino, and Arab, healthy and disabled, Western and Eastern, Muslim, Christian and other-all seven (and what an enchanted number that is) of us, on our way to find the great man, the one and only O. It seemed that history was aware of us at that moment because we had acknowledged that it was putting on one of its best performances, or so the epic novelist writing this would say.

After hours and hours of trudging through rain and steep inclines, and after earning our golden ticket to see O by means of braving through the terrifyingly immaculate terrain of American suburbia, delivering the message of O from doorstep to doorstep, we had merited the right to meet Him.

For hours the crowds waited in angst and excitement, women broke into tears at his mention, paeans of joyous celebration in preparation for his coming abounded, and music and dance filled the open field where he was to make his appearance and speak to us.

Finally, it was time. Prayers were said. Songs of reverence to the Higher Cause were chanted. The crowds cheered, and and right there, a few feet away from me, almost within touching distance, entered the one and only Barack Hussein Obama to deafening screams and applause and chants of "Obama, Obama" and "Yes We Can." And then he spoke. And after every other uttered phrase, the crowd shouted amens. It was a religious experience par excellence, and as one ardent supporter I had the honor to befriend put it, " The man is almost godly." Tens of thousands stood behind us, and there we stood almost at the very front, able to see the wrinkles on the face of The Man Who Could, the almost next president of the United States of American, and Leader of the Free World.

After hours of waiting, he was gone in 20 minutes, but he left everyone buzzing and determined to go out and find that one last American who still hadn't voted and make sure they go to vote for Barack Obama, today, on the 4th of November.

The rest of our story is history. Through the blessings of what has come to be known as "Obama Karma" after walking across dangerous highways in cold wet weather for what seemed like forever, we parted with our companions, a magical bunch in themselves, and were rescued by two other extraordinary and kind strangers who offered us a ride back to our resting abode which was three hours away.

And today? All we can do is wait and see if the prophecy will fulfill itself; if all the drama, and passion and fervor and romance and hope, if all that hope, will be vindicated.

الصراع أساس البقاء

يشعر صديقي قرد الرمال بالقلق على مستقبل أمريكا الرأسمالي من أوباما، يري أن السياسية التى ينادى بها أوباما تعتبر تعدى على القيم الرأسمالية السامية التى قامت بها أمريكا، وأحد النقاط التى تقلقه، والتى قضينا ليلة كاملة نتناقش فيها هى مطالبة أوباما بتحويل انتخابات النقابات العمالية من انتخابات سرية إلى علنية. لأن هذا الأمر سوف يمنح النقابات العمالية قوة أكثر، وبالتالى سوف تعمل النقابات على ابتزاز أصحاب الشركات والضغط عليهم، لتحقيق مطالبهم، وهو ما يراه القرد أمر غير عادل، وخطر على استمرار تلك الشركات، لأن العمال سوف يستنفذون أصحاب الشركات حتى آخر سنت فتنهار الشركة...

أفكار صديقي القرد لا تعبر فقط عن رأيه الخاص بل أيضاً عن مجموعات آراء الأخوة الجمهوريين المتشددين الذين لم يستوعبوا بعد أن التاريخ تجاوزهم كحالة السيدة الفاضلة باميلا التى مازلت أذكر لقائنا بها في نيويورك وترديدها المضحك لعبارة "أوباما الشيوعى أوباما الشيوعى".

بناء على ما سبق، أحب أن أسجل هنا بعض الملاحظات التى لا أقصد بها الرد على صديقي القرد أو السيدة الفاضلة أو المتعصبين الرأسماليين، بل أحب فقط أن أؤكد على مجموعة من الاستنتاجات التاريخية المنطقية:

-لا يوجد شخص خالد، وفي المقابل لا توجد فكرة خالدة، الأفكار تتطور وتدفع بعضها البعص، نحو ما هو جديد دائماً، والأفكار القديمة يتم دفنها بمرور الوقت، لتتحول إلى تربة لأفكار جديدة تثمر وتفيد البشرية بثمارها.

-تنتمى الرأسمالية مثلها مثل الفكر الماركسى إلى مجموعة أفكار الحداثة الغربية التى ظهرت منذ أكثر من قرن، وهو ما أعتقد أن الإنسانية قد تجاوزته، لأننا نعيش في حقبة تاريخية تقوم في الأساس على التنوع العرقي والثقافي والصراع الوحشى بين كل الأفكار والمفاهيم المختلفة، لهذا لم يعد هناك مكان لايدولوجيا قديمة وبائدة لا تقبل أن تطور من نفسها، وتحتكر الحقيقة لنفسها.

-تشجيع أوباما لاتحادات العمال والنقابات المهنية، من الممكن بالفعل أن يؤدى إلى تحول هؤلاء العمال إلى مجموعة من الحمقي الذين يتبعون أفكار قياداتهم النقابية دون الكثير من التفكير، وبالتالى يقومون باستغلالهم، لكن حتى لو حدث هذا السيناريو غير المتفائل، فهناك جانب إيجابي آخر وهو أن هذه القيادات العمالية سوف تمثل ثقل وقوة أمام القيادات الرأسمالية والاقتصادية التى تسيطر على الكونجرس، والإعلام والشركات والكبري، وهذا التوازن في القوى لن يجعل الصراع أكثر عدالة بالطبع أو تكافؤً، بل سيجعله أعنف وأكثر سخونة، ومن خلال هذا الصراع والجذب والشد، سوف يتبقي الفريق الأقوى، طبقاً لقانون الانتخاب الطبيعى المقدس.

-لا يوجد أى علاقة بين السيد الفاضل أوباما والشيوعية، وذلك ببساطة لأنه لا توجد أى علاقة بين الحزب الديموقراطى ومفهوم الحزب الثوري الماركسى، والشيوعية ليست مجرد حكومة مركزية تتحكم في مواطنيها وتصرف عليهم.

-انتخاب أوباما ووصوله للحكم ليس معناه أبداً تحويل أمريكا على دولة شمولية، يتحكم فيها أوباما من خلال سحر عينيه، ويخضع فيها الأمريكان إلى كاريزماته الخارقة، لأنه إذا فشل –وهو غالباً ما سيحدث- يمكن للأمريكان تغيره، لذلك لا داعى لهذه الحالة من الهلع.

As someone born and raised in the devil’s anus known as the middle-east, I have cultivated a very special outlook when it comes to politicians: they are all fake, lying, two-faced, soul sucking cash whores (No offense to actual whores intended, of course). It doesn’t help of course that the supreme majority of our elections are rigged, the supreme majority of the political promises that are made are broken and the supreme majority of those elected have no interest, what s ever, in actually representing the people that voted for them. So when you talk to an arab about a political election, it’s actually pretty common to see them saying “what’s the point? Nothing will change”. Double goes for any US election, for that matter.

You see, traditionally arabs are more inclined to vote and identify with republicans: They support traditional family values, no abortion for women, a government that stays out of their business and against the spreading of the gay Virus by any means necessary. This is why the overwhelming majority of arab-americans in 2000, and the majority of arabs in the arab world, supported the candidacy of George W. Bush when he was still running for president, and also, because they didn’t want a Jew “a heartbeat way from the Presidency”. They thought that once Gore was in Power, the Mossad would assassinate him and the new President Lieberman would send US armies to occupy arab and muslim land. So….ehhh… they voted for Bush. Nice going there, arab world.

So it is kind of understandable, that after 8 years of Bush rule, arabs are pretty much confused in regards to who they should support. Their values are still republican in nature, but they also don’t want to vote for the Party of Bush. Arabs needed hope. Someone who will rise to the occasion. Someone who will assuage their anxiety, after 8 years of living in fear that they might wake up and find the statues of their dictators being torn down, and democracy getting offered to them on a silver platter. Someone who won’t make them feel that they might be sent to Gitmo every time they have to go through special screening at passport control. Someone who will show them that he is not an enemy of the arab, muslim and tanned people. And God answered their prayers, and gave them a Black guy with an arab name and a muslim family background, who talked a good game and who told them- well, kind of hinted actually- that he will be at their side, and then to prove it, went to AIPAC and gave the elders of Zion who run it the oratory equivalent of oral sex.

So as you can imagine, it’s hard to be not cynical about the whole thing if you are an arab. Sure, McCain would like to return Iran to a more peaceful stone-like age, but Obama wants to send troops to northern Pakistan- the only muslim country with Nukes and an unstable enough population to use them- and return us all to the stone age. Arabs do have hopes that Obama is just saying that to get elected though. That in reality, if he could do it without America watching, he would give us one of those winks Sarah Palin has become so famous for, as if to tell us “Just kidding arab world. Just kidding! And as for the Israel supporting stuff, I am just saying that now. Just wait till January and we shall see about that.”

And that, in a nutshell, is how arabs are perceiving the two choices. Our only hope , ironically, is in the belief that Obama is lying to get elected, and that he is secretly on our side, because McCain has made it to explicitly clear that he isn’t anywhere near it.

And they say the choice couldn’t be easier. Ahh..decisions, decisions.

أن تتناول إطفارك في الغابة

الوحدة في ساركيوز تدفع شابا نصف متزن مثلي إلي أن يتناول إفطاره في الغابة التي تقع علي بعد عشرة دقائق من المشي السريع خلف الفندق..هنالك بالأعالي حيث ينبغي أن تتسلق الطريق لا أن تقطعه سيرا.

ذهبت إلي متجر cvs وكالعادة اشتريت بعض البسكويت والكوكيز والشيكولاتة وزجاجة نيسكويك(ملحوظة :بنكهة الفراولة)،ثم تحركت إلي أعلي باتجاه الغابة،كان الجو باردا بصورة لم يألفها جسمي من قبل،أخذت أتمخط رغما عني،بينما عيناي تدمعان،وقدماي تخذلاني ب"التمطوح" يمنة ويسرة،والكاميرا تكاد تنزلق من يدي،بينما طيف ياسر خان يعابثني وهو يقول لي : وضع التصوير الذي تتخذه خاطيء..فاضطر لا شعوريا الي تدارك ما أفعله..

استقررت علي أريكة خشبية عتيقة وسط الغابة بينما السناجب تعبث هنا وهناك.

فتحت كاميرا الفيديو التي تحولت فجأة من بلية ورزية إلي هدية سماوية ..جعلتني اكتشف "المزيد" من مهاراتي الكامنة،فأنا مشروع مخرج ومصور ومؤلف وربما ضابط مخابرات أيضا،أو قس بروتستانتي شاب..وكلها مهن أفضل حالا من التخطيط المستقبلي للتحول للبوذية إن شئنا الصراحة.

أحاول للمرة الألف مع الكاميرا كي تتحول من نظام التصوير الليلي الي الوضع النهاري،ولا فائدة..يتغشاني نعاس البرد الصباحي في الغابة بينما يداي تصران علي استشكاف موضع التحويل للنظام النهاري.

أضع الكاميرا جانبا،وأتناول الكوكيز واشرب النيسكويك،وأتذكر بعض المقاطع من خطاب أوباما الأخير..ثم أقرر التحرك نحو متجر "الأشعة السبع" المتخصص في الاتجار في السلع الروحانية :( تماثيل بوذا،فخاريات آسيوية،أحجار كريمة،بخور،كتب قراءة المستقبل،منحوتات علي شكل تنانين صينية،هراء،أدوات نصب،أوراق تاروت...إلخ إلخ)..إنها الرأسمالية حين تتاجر في بوذا.

لكن المتجر أغلق أبوابه..ربما لأن اليوم هو الأحد حيث لايتحرك أحد في المدينة كلها غيري،أعود من نفس الطريق،وقبيل الانحراف تجاه الغابة ألتقط فلاشا من وسط أوراق الشجر المتساقطة،وأقرر فتحها لدي عودتي للتعرف علي هوية صاحبها وردها له.

أعود إلي الفندق حيث موظف الاستقبال يشبه "أب الاعتراف"..وحيث موظفة المطعم التي أشك في نواياها تجاهي كلما جاءت إلي بصينية العشاء..فنظرات عينيها تنبيء بأمر من اثنين: إما أنها تود أن تغتصبني وإما أنها ممن يفضلون تناول غداء الويك إند مكونا من شوربة العظم البشري،بجوار سلطة الكرنب الروسية.

أدخل غرفتي وقد أنهكني البرد و"كرمش" جلد يدي،أستلقي علي السرير،بينما شاشة اللاب توب تنبهني من وقت لآخر إلي انني أحادث أميرة أو أشاكس حربية،أو أناقش براء في بعض النقاط التقنية في التصوير..أو أن محمد عليّ الدين يصرخ فيّ بالنيابة عن استاذ خالد :اكتب اسرع من كده وراعي فروق التوقيت..رسالتك لازم توصل اسرع من كده...اشتغللللللللللللللللللللللللللللللللل...

أنام مكاني بينما شاشة السي إن إن أمامي :أوباما/الانسحاب من العراق/ماكين/بالين/فلوريدا/نيفادا/الديمقراطيون/السود/الضرائب/التصويت/فارق النقاط.....

One of the most important things I gained from my visit to America was a change in my point of view, a new appreciation for many works of American art. Woody Allen movies about New York, for example, now have a different feel to them. Paul Auster’s New York Trilogy became even more marvelous. And at 10PM when I found myself detained at New York’s JFK airport, I felt the true feelings of Viktor Navorski – as if he were actually sleeping right next to me.

The events were like an extra-long documentary film on the life of a small fly in the New York airport. I arrived at the airport at 3:15 and my next flight to Austin, Texas was leaving at 5:40, so I was in a rush, worried about getting my papers stamped and going through security checks. But I never imagined that such a nightmare could happen to me because I have a bit of luck. That’s why I continued smiling when the officer put my passport in a red file folder and asked me to follow him to the interrogation room.

The same thing happened to me at the Washington airport, and the whole thing didn’t take more than 30 minutes, complete with repeated apologies from the officers for the delay, and for their being forced to conduct all these measures. Most of the time, the issue comes down to my name in English, written “Ahmad Salih,” which is a pure Arabic name shared by many. Because of this, things can usually be sorted out by a few questions on my height, weight, eye color. But this time, as soon as I entered the detention room, my smile disappeared and a true state of fear and stress took hold.

The place perfectly resembled any Egyptian police station, except for the picture of Mr. George Bush handing on the wall in place of Mubarak’s, and that the officers’ clothes were blue rather than white. The American officers had the same cold, dumb faces of their Egyptian counterparts. I told the officer at the beginning about my flight leaving in two hours, but he told me to sit waiting until they called my name.

I sat waiting for an hour not doing anything but gazing alternately at Mr. George Bush and at the faces of the officers, and at the hour hand, which wasted an hour of my time to catch the plane with oppressive speed. I began to worry and my stress increased, so I approached one of the officers and told him that I had a plane to catch in two hours, but he glared at me with an air of self-importance and contemptuously scoffed “I can’t help you. I’m just doing my job.”

After about an hour and a half the officer sitting at the desk yelled “Saaylih, Aaaahmaad” so I went over to him, and he began asking me the exact same questions his colleague had asked me, and I gave him the same answers. “I will spend a week in the US, and am here as part of a program organized by the American University in Cairo and USAID to cover the American elections. I gave him the document I was carrying from the university. He read it with intense concentration then asked me his next smart question, “Are you a student?” I responded, “No, I’m a journalist.” His next smart question, “So then, why did the university send you here?” I began explaining to him that the trip is part of a program from the Kamal Adham Center for Journalism Studies and its programs are not just limited to students.

This back and forth didn’t happen in the easy manner that I describe here. Rather, it was interrupted by his asking me to remove my hand from the desk, and stand back further from the station so I had to raise my voice. Finally he told me to sit back down and wait. I told him that my flight was in less than forty minutes and that I was a foreigner and wouldn’t know what to do if I missed the plane. He raised his eyebrows, pointed to my passport, and said “I want you to go sit there because what we’re doing is more important than the plane.”

I didn’t get the full meaning of what he said, but did understand that he was a picture of the stupidity of authority. The man had an officer’s power, the entry stamp, and was not afraid to enjoy using his authority to the utmost. The only solution was not to engage in conversation with him or provoke him, and to think about the next step – losing my trip to Austin.

I sat waiting. The room contained other Arabs, a Pakistani woman, an Israeli woman, and, of course, some Latin American comrades. Some of them came in after us, but finished their paperwork and left before us. A Latina chick in a red dress came into the room and got her passport back in under twenty minutes – along with a broad smile from the officer, who then looked back down and went back to glaring.

When I got my passport back after four hours the plane had left and I was alone in the New York airport. I went to the airline counter and told my story to an information desk employee named Said. He smiled broadly and said, “We can’t help you. You need to purchase a new ticket.” Sensing a complete loss, I began to think about the options in front of me, saying to myself, “Why don’t I just go outside and abandon myself in the streets of New York, and begin a new, more bohemian, life?” In reality, I just went out to have a cigarette and tried to think more calmly. Less than three minutes later, as the tips of my fingers were turning blue, I decided against the streets of New York. Generally, I don’t recommend anyone going out in New York in winter.

Finally, I decided to buy a new ticket whatever the price, but immediately hit a roadblock when the employee told me that I couldn’t buy a new ticket. The problem was there were no direct flights to Austin, so I had to wait till the next morning when, at nine AM, I would board a plane to Atlanta, and from there on to Austin. I didn’t absorb the full extent of the situation, but it was clear that I would have to spend the night trapped in the airport.

I tried to call my friends or acquaintances, but the phones were disabled or broken। The one working communications device was a public computer. A dollar got you three minutes of slow internet, so I was only able to send a short email to my traveling companions, before going up to the second floor where the restaurants were to get a bite to eat. Then I began an extended tour of the airport.

وكنت فعلاً بقالي اكتر من تلات ايام ممبانمش في اليوم اكتر من ساعتين .... يوم السفر كنتمعتمد اني هعرف انام في الطيارة وحيث ان الرحلة طويلة ..فهضيع الوقت بالنوم العميق
وصلت المطار الساعه تلاته ونص .. قبل معاد الطيارة بساعتين .. ولاني " شنتل " زي ما ميرال قالت فاستنيت ميرال حوالي عشر دقايق بره المطار ودخلنا سوا

المهم زي ما ميرال حكت الطيارة كانت محجوزه كلها .. وقالولنا ان فيه اوفر .. ان اننا ناخد طيارة تانية ويدفعوا تعويض " فارغ " .. مكنش قدامنا خيارات تانية ..

IOWA BA2A!!

This post is just to inform y'all that the Nebraska team, consisted of the 'shentle' Mahmoud Saber and my humble self are going on a road trip to De Moines in the great state of Iowa today. Obama was just there yesterday rallying tens of thousands of his supporters in the purple state. Des Moines is about 3 hours away from Lincoln by car... The angellic journalist, Rhonda Roumani will drive us there where we'll meet with people from both parties and maybe check out some early voting precincts.

Those Crazy Supporters

John McCain has a problem with his supporters: there is a segment that is intent on saying lots of dumb and stupid thing, no matter how much damage it could do to his campaign, in the name of "speaking truth to power". This has happened so frequently that the Maverick from Arizona is no longer taking questions from his audiences in his signature "Town hall meetings" with his supporters. Hell, he is no longer doing the Town hall thing at all anymore:

The town hall format was supposed be the Republican nominee’s favorite campaign forum, highlighting his shoot-from-the-hip style, his broad knowledge on a slew of issues and his irreverent wit. He loved it so much that he challenged Obama to a string of town hall debates. But with their potential for amplifying unscripted outbursts and attention-diverting disasters, the microphones at high school gymnasiums and basketball arenas across the swing states have gone silent during the final stretch of the presidential campaign. McCain, a man who has prided himself on discussions with the common man, has not entertained a single question from audience members since Oct. 10, when he faced a belligerent crowd in Lakeville, Minn., that at times turned against him.

The disappearance of the town hall format from McCain’s campaign is striking, political observers said, offering a vivid example of how a signature strength became a potential liability and was abandoned. Over the past few weeks, McCain has replaced his beloved town halls with large rallies, press statements delivered at factories and in hotel ballrooms, “town square” stump speeches given in the center of small towns, and stops at restaurants and other local landmarks.

Cause straight talk is only allowed one way at McCain rallies, and god knows we don;t need anymore crazy people making McCain look bad. The man does have Sarah Palin as a VP after all. But McCain is not the only one having problems with his supporters. Obama has his share of people saying stupid shit on his behalf. Take Erica Jong for example, and the crap she said to the itlaian publication Corriere Della Sera.

"My friends Ken Follett and Susan Cheever are extremely worried. Naomi Wolf calls me every day. Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an email to tell me that she cried all night and can't cure her ailing back for all the stress that has reduces her to a bundle of nerves."
"My back is also suffering from spasms, so much so that I had to see an acupuncturist and get prescriptions for Valium."

Oh no. Naomi Wolf is worried? Erica had to go to an acupuncturist? Jane Fonda is suffering back pains from stress and sleep-less nights filled with crying from the possibility that McCain might win? Quelle Horrore.

That is not all though. Not only will a McCain Presidency mean that Jane Fonda's back might never heal, it could actually spark a second american civil war. Oh yeah.

"If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me. And it's not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets."

And here we all thought he was pulling out of Iraq. That shrewd Bush. He is so smart, even though he is "the dumbest President ever"™.

By the way, is anybody else laughing at the image of Dick Cheney leading american soldiers into battle against american citizens in the street? Why didn't she add that he would be wearing a Nazi uniform, a monocle and smoking a cigar when he is leading the SS troops while she is at it? Cause yes, a man who never went into combat and has a bad ticker is the right man to lead soldiers against the citizenry. Honestly Erica, if you are stupid enough to think this is an actual possibility, then you really did need that valium. Can I also recommend Prozac? Just a thought.

And last but not least, there is a Texas man who committed suicide , and the only thing he wrote in his suicide note was for Obama to hep his family. Now that's a believer, don't you think?

أحد الاستفادات الهامة التى اكتسبتها من تلك الزيارة لأمريكا هو تغيير وجهه نظرى، وإحساسي بالعديد من الأعمال الفنية الأمريكية، أفلام وودى ألن مثلاً عن نيويورك أصبح لها طعم آخر، ثلاثية نيويورك لبول أوستر أصبحت أكثر غرائبيه... وهكذا فحينما كانت الساعة 10 مساءاً ووجدت نفسي عالقاً في مطار JFK في نيويورك أحسست بالمشاعر الحقيقة لفيكتور نافورسكى، لأنه ببساطة كان نائماً بجوارى.

ما حدث كان فيلم تسجيلي طويل للحياة الليلية لذبابة صغيرة في مطار نيويورك. وصلت إلى مطار نيويورك في الساعة 3.15 وموعد طائرتي الثانية المتجهة إلى أوستن تكساس كان 5.40 لهذا كنت في عجلة ولدى تخوف من أن تطول إجراءات ختم الأوراق والفحص الأمنى، لكن لم أكن أتصور أن هذا الكابوس من الممكن أن يحدث لى، لأنى امتلك بعض الحظ على الأقل، لهذا فقد حافظت على ابتسامتى حينما وضع ضابط الأمن جواز سفري في ملف أحمر وطلب منى التوجه خلفه إلى غرفة الفحص.

مررت بنفس التجربة في مطار واشنطن ولم يأخذ الأمر أكثر من 30 دقيقة واعتذارات متكررة من الضابط على تأخيري واضطرارهم لأجراء كل هذه الفحوصات. الأمر في الغالب يعود إلى اسمى بالانجليزية الذى يكتب "صالح، أحمد" وكما ترون فهو اسم عربي صميم يحمله الكثيرون، وغالباً الأمر لا يتجاوز السؤال عن الطول والوزن ولون العينين، لكن ما أن دخلت غرفة الحجز حتى اختفت الابتسامة وسيطرت عليا حالة حقيقية من البضان والتوتر.

المكان يشبه بالضبط أى قسم شرطى مصري، صورة الرئيس السيد جورج بوش معلقة على الحائط بدل، صورة مبارك، وملابس الضباط باللون الأزرق بدل الأبيض، لكن نفس ملامح الوجوه الباردة المتبلدة لضباط الشرطة المصريين هى نفس ملامح الضباط الأمريكان. منذ البداية أخبرت الضابط أن لدى طائرة آخري بعد ساعتين، لكنه طلب من الجلوس والانتظار حتى يتم النداء على اسمى..

جلست منتظراً لكن الوقت أخذ يمر، ساعة كاملة عبرت وأنا جالس لا أفعل شيئاً سوى التنقل بعينى ما بين صورة السيد جورج بوش، ووجوه الضباط، وعقرب الساعة الذي كان بالطبع يتحرك بسرعة هاضماً الوقت ومضيعاً فرصتى في اللحاق بالطائرة، بدأت في القلق وازداد التوتر، فذهبت لأحد الضباط واخبرته أن لدى طائرة آخري بعد ساعتين، لكنه نظر إلى شذراً وبازدراء وتعنت وعنجه ثم قال لى "لا أستطيع مساعدتك، نحن نمارس عملنا"

بعد حوالى الساعة ونصف هتف الضابط الجالس على الديسك "صالهه اهمد" فاتجهت إليه، ثم بدأ في توجيه نفس الأسئلة التى سألها زميلها وأجبت نفس الاجابات.. سوف أقضي أسبوع في الولايات المتحدة، وأنا هنا جزء من برنامج تنظمه الجامعة الأمريكية في القاهرة وهيئة المعونة الأمريكية لتغطية الانتخابات الأمريكية، وأعطيته الخطاب الذى أحمله من الجامعة، فأخذ يقرأه في تركيز شديد ثم سأل السؤال الذكى التالى "هل أنت طالب؟" جاوبته "لا أنا صحفي" فسأل سؤال ذكى ثانى "إذن لماذا ترسلك الجامعة إلى هنا؟" أخذت أشرح له أن الرحلة جزء من برنامج لمركز كمال أدهم للدراسات الإعلامية ونشاطه لا يتوقف على الطلبة فقط..

هذا الحوار لم يكن يتم بهذا الشكل السهل الذى اكتبه به، بل في المنتصف كان يطلب منى أن انزل يدى من على الديسك، وأن أقف بعيداً عن المكتب، وارفع من صوتى وفي النهاية طلب منى الجلوس والانتظار، فأخبرته أن لدى طائرة بعد أقل من أربعين دقيقة وأننى غريب ولا أعرف ما الذى أفعله إذا فقدت طائرتى، لكنها رفع حواجبه وأشار إلى جواز سفري "أريدك أن تجلس هناك، لأن ما نفعله أهم من الطائرة"

لم أستوعب عبارته، لكن استوعبت أن أواجه صورة من صور غباء السلطة، الرجل معه سلطة الضابط وخاتم الدخول، وسوف يمارس هذه السلطة ويستمتع بممارستها إلى أقسي درجة، والحل الوحيد هو عدم الدخول معه في مناقشات أو استفزازه، والتفكير في الخطوة التالية لضياع الرحلة إلى أوستن.

جلست أنتظر، الغرفة كانت تحتوى على جنسيات عربية آخري، باكستانية، إسرائيلية، وبالطبع الرفاق اللاتينيين، بعضهم جاء بعدنا لكنه أنهى أوراقه وانصرف قبلنا، مزة لاتينية في فستان أحمر دخلت الغرفة وحصلت على جواز سفرها في أقل من عشرين دقيقة مع ابتسامة عريضة من الضابط، بينما يكتفي بالنظر من أعلى لأسفل... شذراً

بعد أربع ساعات حصلت على جواز سفري، كانت الطائرة قد أقلعت، وكنت وحيداً في مطار نيويورك. ذهبت إلى مكتب شركة الطيران، وحكيت لموظف الاستعلامات الذى يحمل اسم سعيد على القصة، فرسم ابتسامة عريضة، وقال لى "لا يمكننى مساعدتك يجب أن تشتري تذكرة جديدة" حينها أحسست بالضياع الكامل، أخذت أفكر في الخيارات الموجودة أمامى، وحدثت نفسي وحادثتنى "لما لا أخرج واترك نفسي لشوارع نيويورك، لنبدأ حياة جديدة أكثر بوهمية"... وبالفعل خرجت لتدخين سيجارة، محاولاً التفكير بشكل أكثر هدوءاً، لكن في أقل من ثلاثة دقائق كانت أطراف أصابعى قد تحولت للون الأزرق... مما جعلنى ألغى نهائياً فكرة النزول لشوارع نيويورك، وعموماً لا أنصح أى أحد بالمغامرة في نيويورك في الشتاء.

في النهاية قررت شراء تذكرة مهما كان ثمنها، لكن حينما وصلت لشباك الحجز وشرحت للموظفة حقيقة الوضع أخبرتنى، أنه لا يوجد داعى لشراء تذكرة جديدة، لكن المشكلة انه لا توجد رحلات مباشرة إلى أوستن، وهو ما يعنى أننى يجب أن انتظر حتى صباح اليوم التالى الساعة التاسعة لكى أركب الطائرة المتجهة إلى أطلانطا، ومن أطلانطا إلى أوستن... لم أستوعب الوضع لكنى فهمت أنه يجب أن أقضي الليلة في مطار نيويورك عالقاً.

حاولت الاتصال بأي واحد من أصدقائي أو معارفي لكن التليفونات كانت معطلة أو لا تعمل، جهاز الاتصال الوحيد الذى فتح معى كان كمبيوتر عام، متصل بالانترنت الدولار الواحد يمنحك ثلاث دقائق من الاتصال البطيء بالانترنت، لهذا لم أستطع سوى ارسال ايميل مختصر لرفاق الرحلة ثم صعدت للدور الثانى حيث المطاعم لتناول أى وجبة ثم بدأت في جولة واسعة لاستكشاف المطار.

وصلت للدور الثانى، وجلست على أحد المقاعد، بجوارى كان هناك عشرات الأشخاص معظمهم أسيويين أو من الدول اللاتينية الشقيقة، أخرجت الكتاب الوحيد الذى كان معى "عام وفاة ريكاردو ريس" لخوسية ساراموجا، جلست اقرأ في الرواية التى تدور أحداثها في لشبونة بين بطلين رئيسين ريس الطبيب والشاعر وبيسوا الكاتب التجاري والشاعر المفضل لدى بعد جويس منصور، عند منتصف الليل كانت صالة المطار كلها عبارة عن سرير نوم كبير، الجميع نائم على الأرض أو على المقاعد، أقرأ فصل من الرواية وأنام، أحلم أحلام قصيرة تطاردنى فيها حروف لاتينية تحاول التنكر في هيئة كلمات برتغالية، أنام وأصحو، أصحو وأنام وبرودة المقعد الحجري تخترق ظهري، أخذت أكح وقدرت أن ريس قد نقل إلى الانفلونزا، لكن تعافيت في الفصل الخامس مع ريس، أخذنى فيكتور في جولة أخيرة في المبنى عند الساعة الخامسة، ثم انتقلت للبوابة أربع وركبت الطائرة المتجهة إلى أطلانطا.

Our trip to Nebraska was a very long and eventful journey which finally landed us in the American heartland of Lincoln, Nebraska. Our Lufthansa flight was supposed to take off at 5:30am, October 30th, from Cairo to Frankfurt. We arrived at the airport at exactly 3:30am, me and Mahmoud met outside the airport and entered together. We stood in line to check our bags and ourselves onto the plane until our turn came and Mahmoud was "shentle-man" and let me go first as the etiquette says. I checked my bag in, it was one underweight bag, took my boarding pass and the passport information card and went to a chair to sit and fill it out, while Mahmoud took his turn. A while later and still no Mahmoud. That was when I found out that Lufthansa overbooked the plane and Mahmoud's getting on the plane is in jeopardy. I freaked.

That's when one of the Lufthansa agents came over to me and Mahmoud and made us an offer. A certain amount of foreign currency in exchange of us giving up our seats. But since Mahmoud had no seat yet and it seemed like they needed my seat, we agreed after we saw the new itinerary. Instead of flying at 5:30am, we'd leave at 9:45am to Amsterdam on Egypt Air, then from Amsterdam to Chicago on KLM, and the last connection from Chicago to Lincoln was the same flight from our old itinerary - on United.

We took the new tickets and the voucher for that certain amount... elly fih el naseeb... and took the next plane.

Anyway we then boarded the plan to Ams and when we got there I bought a stock of Dutch Waffles.

A while later we boarded a KLM plane to Chicago. It was long and boring and the male flight attendant had over average activity in the brain attitude centers.

The second we landed, they called my name and told me to report to the front of the plane. That was when my knees went cotton candy.

I reported to the front of the plane only to be notified that my bag did not make it to Chicago and will be shipped to my final destination the next day.

It would be two days before I was reunited with my stuff.

Two days fighting on the phone with Egypt Air, KLM, and United, before my bag finally was delivered to me this afternoon. You guys have no idea how its like to stay without clothes in this cold for two hours until the washing machine washes and dries your only outfit. Anyways... its these experiences that train you to not go insane from the stupidity of those who are placed in positions that affect your life - like airline phone representatives.

DENOUNCING DETENTION OF FELLOW BLOGGERS IN JFK

The purpose of this post is to denounce the detention of fellow bloggers and team members Ahmed Naje and Ahmed Al Deriny in JFK airport. It really is a big shame that the 8 of us, who came to be known in certain circles as "The 8 Bloggers" have come here to America to blog about American Democracy and be faced with this type of harsh reality. This project is funded by the USAID with the purpose of adding a few building blocks to the bridge across the cultural and political gaps between Americans and the rest of the world. For one branch of the US government to shamelessly cancel out the efforts of the branches trying to improve America's image in international eyes in the name of security , in my humble opinion, does not make America safe... not for Americans and not for Arabs.

Doesn't the Department of Homeland Security know that any terrorist planning any attack will not distinguish any differences between the victims, not racial, religious, or national differences.... and if that's the case... doesn't that make us potential victims too?

By the way, I was again selected for additional screening (when airport security check you for explosives) in Chicago, so was Mahmoud Saber... tell me again that's not profiling.

If one is following the US presidential election closely- and one should, ye lazy bums- one could get all kinds of interesting information on the candidates from the campaign spokespeople of their contenders. For example, if you listened to the Obama campaign, then you would know that McCain is the product of a rather successful genetic experiment to clone an older, grumpier and more senile version of George W. Bush that is determined to nuke every country on the planet and serve your firstborn cooked a la king to the eating pleasure of CEO’s of Oil companies . On the other hand, if you listen to the McCain campaign, you would be surprised to find out that Barack Obama is an Islamist Theocrat, a socialist nationalist and a Marxist communist, all at the same time. Obama, it seems, has many faces, and all of them hate America.

The most recent McCain campaign meme, however, is focused on a fourth Obama: an Zionist-hating, Palestinian-loving, Kuffeyah-wearing, Israel-is-committing-genocide-against-the-Palestinian-people fifth columnist. Their proof? Well, he apparently has past associations with a Palestinian-American scholar , Rashid Khalidi , the director of the Middle East Institute of Columbia's School of International and Public affairs. What is the big deal about that? Well, he apparently does not like Israel very much, to such degree that he is rumored to have been an un-official advisor to the PLO during the Madrid Peace talks. Now, while I am shocked..shocked I tell ya..that a pleastinian-american scholar might not hold a favorable view of Israel and the Israeli occupation, I am almost speechless that a man who may have adviced the PLO- which the US government negotiates with- during peace talks is allowed to live in America today, let alone poison the minds of the airheaded susceptible C students they let into Columbia. For Shame.

But wait, the McCain campaign says: There is more. There is apparently a videotape, which they haven’t seen and that the LA Times has and refuses to release, of a party honoring Khalidi where Obama speaks, and during which Obama is rumored to have said bad things about Israel. Now, if you ask the McCain campaign how they know what’s on the tape even though they never saw it, they will respond to you that this is not really the issue, and that the real issue is that the LA Times won’t release the tape, and that is because the LA Times wants Obama to be President and knows how damaging this tape really is. The LA Times counters that they can’t release the tape because it belongs to a source for a story they did, whom they promised never to publically release. So, dear reader, being the diligent blogger that I am, I searched for the story and found it, hoping to find the clues that the McCain campaign followed to infer the existence of such a conspiracy, specifically paragraphs on what exactly Obama had said at that event. Here is what I found:

A special tribute came from Khalidi's friend and frequent dinner companion, the young state Sen. Barack Obama. Speaking to the crowd, Obama reminisced about meals prepared by Khalidi's wife, Mona, and conversations that had challenged his thinking.

His many talks with the Khalidis, Obama said, had been "consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases. . . . It's for that reason that I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation -- a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid's dinner table," but around "this entire world."

Ok… there must be something else…oh yes, here we go

At Khalidi's 2003 farewell party, for example, a young Palestinian American recited a poem accusing the Israeli government of terrorism in its treatment of Palestinians and sharply criticizing U.S. support of Israel. If Palestinians cannot secure their own land, she said, "then you will never see a day of peace."

One speaker likened "Zionist settlers on the West Bank" to Osama bin Laden, saying both had been "blinded by ideology."

Obama adopted a different tone in his comments and called for finding common ground. But his presence at such events, as he worked to build a political base in Chicago, has led some Palestinian leaders to believe that he might deal differently with the Middle East than either of his opponents for the White House.

Ok, so Obama said that conversations are good and that common ground is better, which is clearly….un-American? I don’t know anymore, man. This election is confusing me. My guess is that they know Obama didn’t say anything personally incriminating at the event, but that the other speakers-as the quote shows- did, so they would like to create a hoopla on how “he was there” when bad things were said about Israel and didn’t do something, unlike John McCain which would’ve pulled out his Hauser and killed them all in the name of Israel’s honor, or something.

So yes, this is the news currently in the US: a focus on how guilt by association is an integral aspect of the decision making process come election day, and that if one really wants to run for political office, one shouldn’t have friends from different political and ideological backgrounds and stick to people who think and act just like him. As for me, I am awaiting the Palestinian resistance name the McCain campaign will give Obama next. Abu Hussein, anyone?

استعان بي ضابط الجوازات ذي الملامح نصف الشرسة_بمطار حون كينيدي بنيويورك_ في الترجمة بينه وبين رجل سوري لا يجيد الانجليزية،استبشرت خيرا،فكما يبدو أنه يثق بي جدا_الضابط لا السوري_ ومطمئن لصحة أوراقي،فقد فهم من محمود أننا سويا وهذا يكفي كما أعتقد.. إلي أنهي كلامه مع السوري واضعا أوراقه في ملف أحمر مقررا أن يصطحبه إلي مكان ما.طمأنت السوري وقلت له بلهجة الواثق المطئمن العليم ببواطن الامور :لا تقلق،هذا لا يعني اي شيء سيء علي الاطلاق..سينتهي ورقك بعد قليل.

دخلنا غرفة مقبضة،بها مصريان وأردني وسودانيون و "السوري" طبعا.. وشابة دون العشرين تبدو لبنانية..مرحي بغرفة الوحدة العربية إذا..بعدها بقليل جاءت سيدة محجبة كانت معنا علي الطائرة،ثم رجل باكستاني وزوجته ثم احد افراد طاقم الطائرة،ثم جيء بآخرين وآخرين إلي أن ضمت الغرفة ممثلين من كافة بلدان العالم الاسلامي تقريبا..(قل اللهم مالك الملك تؤتي الملك من تشاء وتنزع الملك ممن تشاء)

لم يتركني الضباط كثيرا لهذه الملاحظة البدائية،فبعد قليل توافد عدد من اللاتينيين وجاء شاب مكسيكي وآخر تركي وآخر كندي،ثم جاء يهودي بولندي وزوجته،ثم حاخام اسرائيلي ثم شابان اسرائيليان..إلي أن تغيرت تركيبة الغرفة تماما،علي المستويين :العرقي والديني.

بعد أربع ساعات كاملة جرت فيها الكثير من المحاضر والتحقيقات والترحيلات،قرروا الافراج عن ناجي،بينما أعاني من صداع قاتل وألم في عيني اليسري كاد أن يحرمني الرؤية لولا قليل من رباطة الجأش.

قرروا الافراج عني أنا الآخر،دخلت أقرب حمام،بحثت عن حقيبتي..لقد ضاعت فعلا!

اضطررت للتجوال في كل ركن بحثا عن الحقيبة ولا فائدة..إلي أن توجهت لأكثر من مكتب كل منها أحالني للآخر إلي أن تم استدعاء شنطتي من مكان ما استنادا الي الباركود الملصق علي التذكرة.

واجهتني مشكلة في تذكرت الطائرة المتجهة لساركيوز،ثم مشكلة في المطار ذاته حين تأخر سائق التاكسي علي ما يقرب من ثلث ساعة كاملة بينما الوقت في منتصف الليل والثلج يهطل.

ضربت أخماسا في أسداس،فاليوم من أوله أسوأ ما يكون..مشكلة في تذكرتي في القاهرة ثم مشكلة مماثلة في نيويورك واحتجاز وضياع شنطة ثم استردادها وتأخر سائق التاكسي...كنت مستهلكا لاقصي درجة ممكنة..ذهبت للفندق لتكتمل المنظومة :لايوجد حجز باسمك!

حاولت مرارا وتكرارا وراجعنا الكثير من الاوراق الي أن تأكدوا..صعدت الي غرفتي ..حاولت فتح التلفاز..لم أفلح..كان هناك شيء ما بالريموت يحول بيني وبين ذلك..ألقيته جانبا ورميت نفسي علي السرير وقلت للريموت:يعني هي جت عليك إنت.

It's all about the swing states, right? About the indepedents, the undecideds, the uncertainties, the ambiguities, the unknowns, the little enclaves that can make or break your bid to the presidency.

Obama seems to be cashing in on those, if my months of trying to understand what I never understood about the American democratic process has taught me anything. Recently, four "key" battleground states; Michigan, Colorado, Minnessota and Wisconsin, have apparently swung widely to his favour. If you trust the polls.

Am I the only one who is struck by the futility of following every little itsy bitsy particule of event, that seems to send the polls rolling? This time, its McCain's "ineffective leadership" during the financial crisis. And what, exactly, could McCain have done to display effective leadership? What defines effective leadership when the Dow Jones commits suicide, and Mr. Charles Dow himself is probably having seizures in his grave. Dont get me wrong, I dont approve of McCain's little stunt to pause campaigning, but at least he was entertaining, since there was really nothing he could do.

Anyways, so here we are. I guess the economy is the "single most important" issue for voters in the four battle ground states. Im just having a hard time believing it doesnt have more to do with Tina Fey. Tina Fey, top coverage on CNN: NO BODY thinks thats WEIRD? Well I do. How is that news? Only in America are comedy skits routinized as political discourse. Im not hating on the fact that Tina Fey is shaping the destiny of America and the world, except I dont really like her except on 30 Rock: thats a good show and Ive seen Alec Baldwin in person, so Im biased.

Thats what I'd like to see in the polls, to what extent is American political opinion governed and influenced by SNL, and whether the hell thats a good or bad thing.

During the last three years, people in Arab region propagated a rumor claiming that both of the tow black stars; Thierry Henry the French footballer, and Well Smith the Hollywood actor Converted to Islam.

IN the Arab world in general and Egypt in particular, the most populated country in the region, it is believed that Barak Obama would be the best choice to put an end to the historical conflicts in the region. He should be the man we have been waiting for a long time.

Most of Arabs and Muslims, which is possible to consider Egypt represent their point of view imagine that since Obama has Islamic roots, he might tackle the Middle East issues differently. Based on the grounds of common religion they hope he would be sympathetic and cooperative. Even after declaring he is Christian and his name enjoys Jewish roots, he remains the best choice in the eyes of the Arabs.

In my opinion many explanations may be made for the Arab support of the democratic candidate, but the majority of these explanations are related to the Arab viewing Obama as an equal.

We believe that since historically Obama and his ancestors were done injustice because of slavery and segregation, he would recognize the anger, frustration and feeling of injustice Arab and the Muslims have been feeling for decades.

ON the other hand, there is a candidate to feel our historical pain with USA, a candidate carrying in his blood the same pain, candidate called Barak Obama, and may be the next president of USA.

In the collective Arab mentality McCain reflects the image of military dictators who came to authority by a coup d'état most of the time. Arabs still suffer from such rulers like Hosni Mubarak the latest heritage of July revolution. Mubarak,80 years, is the Egyptian president who has reigned the most populated Middle Eastern country for over 27 years after al-Sadat assassination in 1981,who was one of July revolution member).

So some Arab believes that Obama is the best since he is someone else is not McCain!

Being different than all previous American presidents and candidates Obama is the image of hope and change, while McCain with his piercing eyes and fair skin is reminiscent of unpleasant memories of the past or signs of the present.

So Obama's age has a strong impact. He is IN HIS forties, reflecting many dreams of today's Arab political youth: the ability to acquire authority monopolized by the elder generations for too long a time.

Demographic studies of the Arab region show that youth shape most of population. This may explain the popularity of the currently jailed EGYPTIAN opposition figure Ayman Nour Who IS 44 years old.

Presidential Debate Round Two: Reinforcing the Status Quo?

Going into this penultimate debate, Obama was already ahead in the polls, partially because Americans(and the rest of us are catching on) are in panic mode about the plummeting economy and for poor McCaine,regardless of how his campaign performs, it's simply not a good day to be a Republican.

While everyone keeps talking about the town-hall setting having been an advantage for McCaine, all it brought home for me was the fact that Obama is generally a better speaker(or at least more polite, didn't point at McCaine and call him "that one!"), more charismatic and easier on the eyes( no, really, did you see that smile?), and McCaine is OLD. I mean you could really see all 73 of those years on stage tonight, and I don't know how Americans saw it, but I'm not a huge fan of giving very old people lotsa lotsa power. Adding on to that,except for the first "not you Tom" in response to who he would appoint as treasurer, McCaine completely bombed the humour factor, whether it was his hair transplants or whatever else it occured to him to joke about. McCaine made really bad jokes and the audience's faces were stone cold.I actually felt really bad for the guy.

Having said that, McCaine was the only one to actually bring something new to the table with his proposal about buying out bad home morgages and allow home owners to renegotiate their morgages in light of the new values of their homes. This is in fact quite a revolutionary idea right now, but McCaine seemed almost unsure about it, and didn't make a point of showcasing it or contrasting it to Obama's lack of new input.

On the other hand, Obama was a disappointment. I mean, he might've won the debate, but it seems like Barack is getting weary or losing oomph or something, because, tonight, with 50 million Americans watching and the election 27 days away, I did not see the inspiring Obama of the primaries or even the masterful orator we saw in Berlin. Too much repitition, too little change. That and all the invade Pakistan talk is forcing me more and more, and earlier than I'd meant to, to stop being distracted by Barack's smile and come back to reality (especially regarding foreign policy) when it comes to Obama.

Either a tie or a slight advantage would mean that Obama won this debate, and according to the earliest polls, he did get a slight advantage (although I would only give him a tie). What this means for the elections, is that this debate only reinforces the existing situation : Obama stays ahead. And, what the heck I'll go for it and make my prediction: unless some unforseen scandal happens, or McCaine (or the economy)has some miraculous comeback, OR Americans are just more nervous about electing a black man than we think, Barack Obama will win this election.

Now, let me say that as someone who has studied political science and is interested in the methodologies of the field, I've always been quite wary, if not averse , to a focus on quantitative research. When it comes down to it, social sciences are about human behaviour, and that is not something I believe you can easily translate into numbers. But the Americans have got me hooked on this stuff! Seriously, polls here, polls there, polls polls everywhere! There's no escaping them, and I must admit that they make more sense when studying a more or less proper election, then when studying various issues in my part of the world. Now, like all other statistic whores, I await the polls with bated breath. So having said that, these are CNN's initial poll numbers less than half an hour after the end of the debate:

When asked who won the debate 54% of Americans who watched the debate thought Obama did while only 30% of the same segment opted for McCaine. Obama's favourable/unfavourable ratings before the debate among those who watched were 60% favourable and 38 % unfavourable respectively. Post debate, these numbers changed in Obama's favour to 64% favourable and 34% unfavourable. McCaine's favourable/unfavourable numbers however did not change, remaining at 51% favourable and 46% unfavourable.

On the issues, here are the numbers: On Iraq, Obama wins 51% to 47%; on terrorism, McCaine wins 51% to 46%, but -wait for it- on the economy, Obama wins 59% to 37% and on the financial crisis Obama also wins 57% to 36 %-yep, double digits on the economy, is it time to say bye bye McCaine?

Some more interesting numbers :Who was expressing their points more clearly? 60% for Obama to 30% forMcCaine(dude's old, y'know?). Who spent more time attacking the opponent? 63% McCaine to 17% Obama( Dow Jones Industrial average went down 500 points today, the Republicans are like a dying wild animal thrashing out in all directions)Who seems like a stronger leader? 54% for Obama to 43% for McCaine (exactly what the Republicans don't want to hear as they try to paint Obama as the risky inexperienced candidate) and,one of my favourite questions, who is more likeable? 65% for Obama and 28% for McCaine(Who could resist that Obama Smile?).

The Palin-Biden Debate

Okay, I just finished watching the debate, which meant that I had to stay up till 3 am my time just to see the damn thing start. But now that it's over, I figured I should have something posted up on it before I pass out.

Now, before this thing started, I have to say that I had pretty low expectations all around: Palin was dreadful in most of her interviews, and Biden, well, Biden was being Biden. So It's fair to say that like most of you, I placed the bar pretty low for this debate. So low that I wasn't actually looking for who answers best, but more like who will screw up the most. And I was also kinda dreading Ifill being partisan, because I didn't want anyone making excuses for Sarah if she does fumble it. Now, that being said, here are my reactions:

"Can I call you joe?". Yep, she sure came with her charm on.
They both start strong, him more slow and authoritative, and her more chipper and energetic. While I liked her answers, the speed in which she gave them were signs of either someone very nervous or someone who is regurgitating memorized talking points.
She supports the bailout, he supports the bailout, both of them are for the greatest scam in the histroy of the American public. Boooo..
Okay, here we go, He starts saying Bush, she starts saying Maverick. This is gonna be a long night.
The corruption and greed on wall street got said way too many times.
"I am not gonna answer the question way you or the moderator want me to answer"? For real?
She knows policy positions, she is calling Biden on Obam's positions, and the things Biden said about Obama. Biden deflects it all and attacks McCain. Palin is not attacking Obama that much. Biden doing the VP's job, she ain't.
Is it just me, or does it seem like Biden is enjoying himself too much every time she attacks him?
Good points on using her record in Alaska. I wouldn't have expected Alaskan experience to be used as an example in Darfur, but hey, she sold it, and gave proof that she does know there is a world outside of America.
She seemed to try to convey that she is bringing something to the ticket as well. She is selling herself to the public while trying to debate Biden at the same time. The double-sided efforts started wearing her down after a bit.
Okay, I have to say this. She is hot. A total MILF. I like looking at her speak. I even like hearing her talk. She has really good body language and sound inflection. Stylistically she is good. But to be honest I found myself not listening to some of her answers. I don't know if it's because she rambles on very quickly and is all over the place, or it's because she is distractingly eye-pleasing.
Oh, wow, she really was sucking Israel's dick with that answer, and Biden was like"Hoe, no you didn't" and immediately started sucking on Israel's Balls as well. It was beautiful how they competed for the "who loves Israel the most "prize, which was completely unnecessary for either one of them to do, because Palin just wrote an essay in love of Israel and Biden is AIPAC #1 guy. But I am sure it made Florida's Jews happy, and they are an important group to keep happy. Ask Sarah Silverman, she 'll tell you.
Is she getting angry? Her answers seem to be testier by the moment. Why is she getting angry?
Palin is not winning this, but is not losing this either. She is holding her own, while Biden is clearly in his element.
You and NATO Kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, Biden? For real? Anybody listening to this?
Did she actually manage to turn Joe's attempt on reaching out to gay voters into having it on record that they both agree on their opposition for gay marriage? Did that just happen?
Oh boy, the word Maverick again. How many times she said it so far? 25? I should've started a drinking game.
Yay for Local politics pandering: Palin talks about coming from a small town and being one of the middle-class people, and Biden of course starts talking about his roots as well. One day I would like to see a candidate being like "You know, being raised in the upper east side of manhattan, I was surrounded by a lot of normal people who cleaned my house, and they thought me all about regular folk". Maybe in 2040? The Trump-Hilton Ticket anyone?
"Say it ain't so, Joe". Folksy and cute. Does this translate to folksy voters? Cause the gradschool graduate democrat-voting americans I was watching this with looked like they were getting an aneurysm whenever she did something like that. Or winked. They would twitch when she winks.
Holy shit. On the one issue she was supposed to own- having and raising a family- she was upstaged by Biden , who talked about how wife's death and how hard it was to raise his kids as a single father, and then he chocked back a tear. Holy crap. Sarah, you better start crying or talking about your special-needs child or something. He just got the sympathy vote.
Did she just attack the media? She must be really confident that she did well in this debate if she actually goes out and says that she is gratrful to talk to the people without the media filter. Yeah, that Katie Couric sure is a manipulator, and like, a filterer. Yeah, a filterer. It's a word. Look it up!
Hmm, pretty standard closing statements. We will fight for you. blah blah. snooz.

Okay, now to the verdict, substance wise Biden won, but Palin held her own- i.e. didn't commit any major blunders, was actually using big words correctly and even had a couple of good answers there. Style wise Palin won: she seemed more relate able, more common american woman and definitely a Washington outsider. She officially does better in debates or behind podiums than in interviews. Biden looked commanding, but there is something about him that never says "Leader". She has buckets more Charisma than he does, but since she is not the main name on the ticket, I am not sure that counts. On the bright side she just stopped hurting the ticket. Now if she can only give a couple of good press interviews, she just might be able to turn this whole thing around. But so far Obama/Biden are the stronger ticket. They are performing better. It's still anyone's race though.

You just never know.

The VP Debate: Republicans Sigh in Relief and Democrats get Boost

One thing I will say about the VP debate, is that it was definitely more interesting and football-game like than the first presidential debate last Friday. Partly, this is because with Sarah Palin becoming a national punchline last week and with the McCaine campaign's erratic behaviour in the same time period, America was really waiting for this debate to prove something. No, wait, why am I being nice? America was waiting for Palin to prove something. Unlike the Obama/McCaine debate, this was not seen as a game that was being played on equal terms, where Sarah Palin was clearly viewed as disadvantaged in terms of her basic question-answering skills as displayed in the Couric and Gibson interviews.

While all sides of the political spectrum focused on Sarah Palin's awaited performance (no one was really talking about Biden last week at all were they?Let's admit one thing, Palin is definitely more interesting than Biden), depending on where you stood you either looked forward to Palin bombing the debate with a series of badly composed sentences and blank stares, or hoped that Palin would restore her image as the down-to-earth vitality serum of the Republican ticket.

If you were one of those Palinofiles, or just a Republican hoping to dear God that Sarah Palin would stop embarassing you, this was a pretty good night. Clearly the Republicans did a good job of prepping Palin for this night, and she had a whole bunch of names (one of which she got wrong repeatedly although Biden was nice enough not to call her out on it) and figures in her head and ,I think , did a good job of regaining her status as an asset to the Republican ticket when it came to their own base.

Basically Palin exceeded all expectations(and it must be said, they were quite low), and seemed to connect well with voters on energy issues and social/cultural issues. If you were a Republican that was becoming less and less confident about your choice last week, today you're probably going to vote for McCaine and never look back. Palin came off as the down to earth Washington outsider (although I found her extremely insincere and rehearesed) and a positively sexy soccer mom (OMG did you see that glittery U.S. flag entwined with an "S" brooch?).

That having been said, Biden won this debate. He got more comfortable and clearly stronger as the debate progressed while Palin started off stronger than she ended. He was more articulate, had vastly more substance on all issues specifically (and in my opinion, particularly drastically) the economy and foreign policy, and did well keeping up with Palin's I-know-what-it's-like-to-rough-it-I'm-just-like-you talk. While Palin did well for Palin, and not bad at all by most standards, she didn't do enough to sway undecided voters, and this election hinges on that small percentage of undecided voters. To the unsure voter, I don't think Palin proved that she was as qualified as Biden (in my opinion despite her performance tonight she still isn't qualified period) to be number two in the United States government.

The earliest polls say that voters agree with me: while both Palin and Biden did much better than expected, voters who watched the debate with a considerable although not massive margin, believe Biden triumphed. 51% siad Biden did better, while only 36% thought Palin did better. At the end of the day, matter of fact seems to have won over folksy. My projection is that if you are an undecided voter, the more educated you are the less likely you are to have been swayed by Palin. Overall, I still don't think this debate was conclusive in terms of the presidential race.

The early verdict? Palin did well for herself, but not so much for the McCaine campaign: the effect of the debate was to allow Palin (and McCaine) to survive another day (and perhaps give Palin a shot at the 2012 presidential elections, as frightening a thought as that is) but not enough of a boost to end up ahead in the race. Still, it continues to be a close election and we will only really know come November 4th.

ساركوزى كرجل أعمال ناجح أيقن بعد مسيرة طويلة أن المال ليس كل شيء وأنه يحتاج أيضاً إلى السلطة، اعتبر الأزمة المالية النهاية لنظام السوق المفتوح المعروف عندنا في دول العالم الثالث ذات الخلفية اليسارية بالرأسمالية المتوحشة، ونادى ساركوزى بنظام رأسمالى جديد يخضع لقيود وسياسيات تحميه من الجنون.

ما طالب به ساركوزى بالطبع ليس سياسية جديدة أو تصحيح للنظام للرأسمالى، بل ببساطة خلطة قديمة بين رأس المال والفساد السياسى، جربنها قبل ذلك في مصر وتمت تجربتها في أكثر من دولة والنتيجة كانت طحينة سببها سياسيين مثل أحمد عز يتحكمون في وضع القوانين التى تخدم مصالحهم فقط. وهذا على الأرجح ما يرغب فيه أشخاص فاشيين مثل ساركوزى يحاولون الاختباء حول شعارات اشتراكية.

التصريح الثانى للسيدة الفاضلة كوندليزا رايس وفيه تدافع "رايس" عن الرأسمالية وتؤكد أنها سبب كل التطور الذى شهدته البشرية في السنوات الأخيرة، وأنه لا حل إلا الرأسمالية. طبعاً هذا كلام مسخرة لأن ألمانيا النازية مثلاً هى التى اخترعت البلاستيك وعشرات الاختراعات الأخرى وهذا لا يجعل النازية صالحة لكل زمان ومكان، وإذا كانت الرأسمالية هى السبب في ظهور نظام وندوز فهذا لا يعنى أنها النظام الصالح لكل زمان ومكان، بل يعنى أنها نظام الإدارة الذى قام بدوره على أكمل وجه اتجاه الإنسانية والآن جاء الدور لكى يتنحى جانباً ويترك المجال لنظام آخر..

نظام لم تتحدد ملامحه بعد، ولا أحد يمكنه تحديد شكله، لكنه بالتأكيد لن يكون النظام الذى سيترك مصير الإنسانية، في يد حفنة من التجار الذى يتربعون على رأس الشركات والتكتلات الإقتصادية الكبري، ولن يعمل هذا النظام على دعم النزعات الاستهلاكية لدى الأفراد العاديين، من خلال حسابات بنكية افتراضية... ببساطة لأنه

أولاً ثبت أن تحويل الأفراد إلى قطعان ماشية لا تفكر إلا في الحصول على المنتج المعروض في الفترينة، لا يؤدى إلى نمو اقتصادى حقيقى بل مزيد من الأموال المسحوبة من خلال بطاقات الائتمان دون ضمانات حقيقية. وفي النهاية لا تعبر حركة الأرقام والمؤشرات التى تعكسها البورصة والنشرات الاقتصادية عن ثروة حقيقية بقدر ما تعبر عن مجموعة من الديوان الافتراضية التى تنتقل من اليمين إلى اليسار ومن اليسار إلى اليمين.

ثانياً لأن البعض أخيراً بدأ يقتنع بأن الثروات الموجودة على سطح الكوكب تتناقص يوماً بعد يوم.

ثالثاً لأن جورج بوش تبين في النهاية أنه ليس عضو في الحزب الجمهوري، بل عضو في خلية شيوعية سرية ذات نزعة تروتسيكه تعمل على تقويض دعائم النظام العالمى، من خلال تخريب النظام الاقتصادى الأمريكى، وعدم احترام أهم مبادئه وهى حرية السوق وعدم جواز تدخل الحكومة وتلاعبها بذلك السوق، فبوش يسعى بهمه إلى توريط الحكومة في أزمة البنوك بحيث تتحول الديون من ديون البنوك والأفراد إلى ديون الحكومة، وبدل من أن تعلن البنوك إفلاسها ربما يأتى يوم تعلن الحكومة إفلاسها، وبهذا تتضح حقيقية انتماءات بوش السياسية اليسارية المنحرفة.

رابعاً: فقد أثبتت الحوادث الأخيرة والأزمة التى تتضخم يوماً بعد يوم صحة المقولة التى تقول "ويمكرون وكان تروتسكى خير الماكرين"، وإن كان هذا لا يعنى بالطبع صحة ما ينادى بها السيد ساركوزى من عودة الإشراف الحكومى للسيطرة على السوق.

خامساً: من يدري، ربما تكون هذه الأزمة البداية الجديدة لنظام جديد، يوفر حرية التنقل للأفراد والبضائع لا الشركات الكبري فقط، ويضع حداً لسيطرة الحكومات في العالم كله وتداخلاتها في رأس المال، ويفتح الباب لسوق حر لا يخضع لأى شروط إلا لشروط القوى العاملة التى تقوم بالإنتاج والتى تتحمل لوحدها عبأ النجاح أو الفشل دائماً، سوق لا يخضع فيه رأس المال لسيطرة الحكومات الفاسدة أو حتى الديمقراطية بل لسيطرة العرض والطلب، وقانون النقابات العمالية المستقلة التى هى الأدرى بالتأكيد بقدراتها.

I watched the debate at a bar near my hotel, and sat through the 90 minutes wondering when things would heat up-they didn't. Maybe it's because the candidates are weary, maybe they've vented all their frustration in Washington at the bailout talks, but either way, neither McCain or Obama hit the jackpot last night.

Other than McCain calling Obama inexperienced and unknowledgeable a couple of times, there were no low blows during the debate, and neither of the candidates said anything particularly new. Rather it was a sort of sum up for anyone who hadn't been following the elections for the past 6 months on what the candidates' positions were. While the polls say that people think Obama did slightly better, my modest opinion is that neither candidate had very much of an effect on undecided voters last night. While I respect the seriousness of last night's debate, I think with the polls so close, the stakes are too high for either McCain or Obama to hold back. I think more hard hitting, agressive discussion is going to be necessary if these debates are going to determine the next president of the USA.

Either way, it should be fun to watch Biden and Palin next Thursday. I predict that Palin will compose a total of 3 coherent arguments with proper syntax. But that's just me.

بدأ أوباما حماسيا وماكين خافتا ،وانتهت المناظرة علي العكس تماما من إيقاع بدايتها، حيث تمكن العجوز ماكين_من وجهة نظري_ من هزيمة منافسه الديمقراطي الشاب باراك أوباما..إن كان هنا مساحة لاطلاق احكام من قبيل انتصار وهزيمة...

فيما_للأسف_انزلق السيناتور الشاب لتأييد العجوز الماكر في أكثر من موضع،وانتهت المناظرة وقد أظهر المرشح الجمهوري نظيره الديمقراطي كمراهق طائش تنقصه الكثير من الخبرة، لايدري كيف يتصرف،ولن يتمكن بحال من الأحوال من إدارة الولايات المتحدة...

حاول اوباما مداعبة مشاعر الجماهير وحمل علي اسامة بن لادن والقاعدة ربما ليظهر أنه ليه في اللوش والعوء يعني،لكن ماكين عاجله :"انت ستجلس الي نجادي وهوجو شافيز؟"..."ستجلس مع رجل يريد ازاحة اسرائيل من علي الخريطة؟".."لا تقل ان الجلوس اليه دون شروط مسبقة سذاجة..انها شيء كارثي"..

"العراق؟ أنت ذهبت الي هناك يا اوباما ولم تلتق بيترويس..أوباما انت لا تفرق بين التكتيك والاستراتيجية"...

I am not the Sandmonkey or أحمد or Wael Abbas. I respect their diligent and consistent blogging and the fact that they have loyal audiences. They (and many others including writers on this blog) are serious bloggers, writers and journalists. I, on the other hand, write mostly for my own amusement and do not usually care much if anyone bothers to read what I write. I have realized, however, how much more of an interesting experience blogging can be once there is interaction with readers, feedback, and an exchange of ideas between blogger and blog devotee or critic. It is especially interesting when your readers come from a diversity of cultural and political backgrounds, which is why this blogging project is so interesting for me.

One of the opportunities we were fortunate to get to interact with a wider public has been the link to our blog generously posted on WRAL's (North Carolina's biggest news channel) GoLo site, which is an interactive, blog-oriented site maintained by the channel. It has been no less than fascinating to read the comments North Carolina readers have left about our blog. The great majority of the comments have been respectful, interesting and interested.

There have also been some comments which I have found, mmm, shall I say, revealing? Egydiva earlier posted one of these comments and her response to it. I don't think that these commenters are representative of anything. I do, however, think it is important to know that this frame of mind exists. I'm also not sure that everyone would have the same reaction to these comments that I did, so I thought I'd post the comments and my responses here and get a wider variety of opinions.

From a commenter named Rationality: " When I went to Cairo a few years ago I was bombarded with accusations that Bush and Isreal were behind 9/11. It really got old after a while. It's interesting to get the other point of view, but it's going to be skewed with the fact that they don't have the freedoms of speech and religion over there that we have here."

My Response: "Please don't assume that me or any of my fellow bloggers are incapable of free, rational or critical thought because of your perceptions about what kind of atmosphere I live in. Please don't be patronizing about the quality of my thought production.Most Americans cannot locate foreign countries on maps and do not even own a passport. Yet, not only does America have an opinion about just about every place under the sun, but voting tax payers money is used to support unpopular governments, fund wars and determine the fates of millions. That, to me, is "skewed."

From a commenter named GetRight: "I would very much like to know, on an individual basis, each one's opinion of the violent tactics employed by Muslims all over the world to accomplish their political goals. Their responses to this subject will define where they stand and tell us a great deal about how they may portray "us" when they return home.While all Muslims are not terrorists there ARE many, who would not participate in terrorism, yet they are very sympathetic to the cause and methods of terrorists. When these sympathizers are journalists they may sound a whole lot like a terrorist to us."

My Response: " I am curious as to which of our posts sounded to you like it promoted terrorism?I have already stated my opinion on violence. Should I now ask every individual American jounralist what they think of violent tactics used by America and its allies in every corner of the world for political purposes? Surely someone of such a global outlook as you must know that this exists abundantly?I believe terror is terror whether you have the largest army in the world or an illegal milita. More people have been killed in the last two decades by American funded wars and weapons as well as American soldiers than by all the terrorist attacks (Islamic and otherwise) combined. Believe it or not, not all of those people deserved to die. But I believe that this comparison is petty and misses the point.It shouldn't matter who killed more people. All that should matter is that it stops. I will do my best to promote a true and non violent Islam, will you do the same for America?"

Ever since EgyDiva and I have been in North Carolina we have been amazed at how nice, kind and helpful people have been. Southern American kindness and hospitality are nothing like I've ever seen, and I think It's contagious: EgyDiva and I have become considerably nicer people since we've been here. I'm still a city girl and New York and Seattle are probably the only places I would live in America, but the folks here are mighty nice and I'm just a darned sucker for the South!

For the past three weeks I have been surrounded by journalists of all shapes, sizes and colors. And I mean that both metaphorically and literally. It has been great: Journalists are usually sharp, witty, critical and well informed. Some of them are so impressive that they're just darned sexy. They make for interesting conversation, and are probably great at other things too, like knitting and drinking games.

But there are other qualities which journalists pride themselves on portraying and inhabiting. Certain words make you feel warm fuzzy and glowing with pride in the crazy and chaotic world that is the media, these include objectivity, fairness, balance and detachment.

I am not a journalist by training, nor do I have any serious journalistic aspirations. I like to write, and I like to give my opinion when I have one. To give my opinion means that I will not always necessarily be objective. I want to retain that right. While I think objectivity is not a bad thing to aim for, I believe that the idea of objectivity obscures the fact that I am a human being who sees the world through a particular lens. One, I believe, which is valuable particualrly because it is subjective.

To write I must care enough to channel my energy towards formulating articulate ideas about a particular topic. Most of the time, this means that I care enough to have an opinion about what should be rather than what is. I don't believe in detatchement from my subject matter, and will not aspire to be detatched.

Because I am not a reporter or news journalist, I am also not always concerned with presenting both sides of the story, or making sure that I am balanced. Having said all of that, I do try to be fair. I do try to check my facts and make sure that I am not citing make-believe figures. I try not to accuse anyone of anything too outlandish without proof and I generally attempt to stay away from unfounded hypotheses or offensive content.

Writing, for me, is a continuing experiment, sometimes more succesful than others. Throughout my time in the US I have been giving out the adress of this blog to a myriad of journalists, writers and even politicians. With blogs being treated as the new medium for journalism and the so called " death of the newspaper," I feel that some might expect this to be a consistent, coherent and "professional" blog about the US elections. While I don't speak for any of my fellow bloggers on this site, I will say that I do not always aim for consistency, I don't hold myself to the standards of professional journalism, and I blog about whatever I feel I can write intelligently about, even if it is not directly related to the US elections.

There are many bloggers in the US who are journalists, and many others who provide day to day election coverage. That is not, I believe, why we are here.I approach this project as a creative social, intercultural and political experiment. There is much that bloggers, even those of us who do not call themselves journalists, can learn from journalism as a profession. But I also believe that there is much we can contribute because we are so diverse, versatile and unhemmed by certain professional or technical standards.

It is in that spirit that I invite you to have an open mind when reading our blog, and follow us as we try to make of this more than a cliched East meets West encounter, or a boring comparative commentary on America versus Egypt. For me, this is about what is striking, what is interesting, and mostly, like everything else I write, what is personal. Happy reading, and happy elections.

Currently based in North Carolina, me and Zeinab went to visit the largest TV station in North Carolina, WRAL, who also include a blog-ish section called Go-lo, and they included a link to our blog
Some locals expressed some interest, others were less impressed. Naturally, I got into a bit of a, lets say, encounter with the skeptic who said:

"I've been out and missed a lot of the discussion but let me tell you where I'm coming from. Arabs for the most part are muslim. In my opinion all muslims are potential terrorist due to their upbringing, training, education, and religion. Most of the terrorist tragedies in the world in the last 20 years were perpetuated by insane muslims. They have no respect for anyone except their own beliefs. As long as we're giving they take but then they don't reciprocate. Again, I don't see where their opinion about our elections matters one bit."

Because I was annoyed, and because indeed this was the first unfriendly remark i'd received here in the all-too friendly American south, I tried to be diplomatic in reply:

"Dear Mohawk, im one of the bloggers on the collective blog that angela was talking about and who WRAL was nice enough to invite for a visit of the station. Am i supposed to ignore your offense remark? Following your logic, or at least your example, I have every reason to believe that every american is a xenophobic, narrow minded, stubborn racist. However, Ill choose not to make stereotypes, and ill try to take the example of the other, friendlier americans ive met here in North Carolina to make a more informed impression about American society. I advise you to do the same, not just about muslims, but for the sake of how you seem to see americans too. everyone else, please check the blog! and we appreciate the feedback."

Our friend, named after an outdated and mishaped hair cut was quick to retort:

"Dear Egydiva, I am not a racist, never have been, never will be. I base my opinions on facts and my own life experiences. Muslims at the present time present a danger to the world that only a fool can ignore. I don't know what the answer is but I do know I don't want their opinion inserted into my country's presidential decision making process. I can forgive but not forget. I recommend you do some soul searching and research of your own.PS: I checked out the blog which is a slap in the face at the American political system. It's all onesided. I apalled that WRAL would even consider providing a link to it."

Thanks for the heads up Mohawak, Ill be sure to renounce my terrorist ways (despite that they are intrinsically instilled in me genetically) and stay out of American presidential business, just like the americans have stayed out of mine.
